The American Association of Neurological Surgeons mourns the passing of Merwyn Bagan, MD, a past president of the AANS and a respected leader in organized neurosurgery. Dr. Bagan dedicated his career to advancing the field and caring for patients, including serving as Concord, New Hampshire’s first neurosurgeon. His path in medicine took him through Dartmouth College, Boston University School of Medicine and neurosurgical training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, London and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, shaping a career defined by service, scholarship and leadership. Throughout his life, Dr. Bagan remained deeply committed to the neurosurgical community and to the patients and colleagues he served. His leadership as AANS president reflected a lifelong dedication to advancing neurosurgery and strengthening the profession. The AANS community extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. His legacy of service, mentorship and commitment to neurosurgery will endure.
