Chronology of Local Coinage Production in the Horn of Africa. • Aksumite Empire: Coinage was minted from around 270 to 620 AD—a span of roughly 350 years. • Sultanate of Mogadishu: Coinage was minted from approximately 1300 to 1700 AD—a span of 400 years. • Awdal Sultanate (Bar Sa'ad Din): Coinage production likely coincided with the relocation of its capital to Harar in 1520—if not shortly after—and lasted until 1647, after which Harar broke off and formed the Emirate of Harar. • Emirate of Harar: Coinage continued to be minted from 1647 to 1887, a period of 240 years.

@FergieBallFan Same situation for Somalis. We used to have Oromos & Hararis fighting to secede from Ethiopia alongside Somali Galbeed, yet today we have Somalis themselves trying to secede from Somalia while Ethiopia and Kenya occupy parts of the country. Unbelievable levels of clout loss.

@k0toamatsukam1 Probably because most Harari coins weren’t made of precious metals, but of metals like copper and brass instead. Same thing for the coins minted in Muqdisho. That's why Maria Theresa & German Thalers were used for larger purchases because they had higher precious metal content.

There were West African states that had well established trans-Saharan trade routes and riverine transport corridors, along with Ajami-based administrative writing. There was also no meaningful metallurgical gap until the industrial revolution. The real disadvantage was the reduced trade intensity between the Sahel and Guinea Coast due to the tsetse fly, which hampered technological and knowledge diffusion, and prevented regional advances from becoming universal over time.

Iran under heavy sanctions and embargoes developed some of the most sophisticated drone and ballistic missile technologies, supplied Hamas with weapons, and is among the world’s largest steel producers. Meanwhile the Gulf Arabs have no industrial or technical capabilities to speak of and use their Western missile defense systems to aid the Israelis. Shias are the laandheers of the middle east it is what it is.

@RSA_Observer They can also launch satellites into low earth orbit independently which means they're probably capable of building ICBMs as well, they just chose to put a cap on their missile range capabilities. It's a serious country in an unserious region.

Keep reading. There's a lot more to this. Some other immediate points - they have a well developed auto industry and manufacture over a million cars anually. They manufacture very sophisticated gas turbines for the gas industry. They are a leader in ultra high strength concrete. And so on.

@hornaristocrat The total budget for federal & member states is around $3 billion, of which only $1 billion is domestic revenue from taxes. $3 billion in domestic revenue is the theoretical ceiling until conflict ends and the whole country is under the territorial sovereignty of one government.
