😂👶 MY FIRST DAY IN LABOUR WARD… I ALMOST APOLOGIZED TO MY MOTHER When I started my Obstetrics and Gynaecology posting, I was excited. After all… How difficult can Labour Ward be? Women come in pregnant. Push small. Baby comes out. Everybody smiles. Photos are taken. Life goes on. Abi? 😭😂 Omo… I was very ignorant. The moment I entered Labour Ward, reality slapped me with Caesarean section force. Women were screaming. Nurses were moving fast. Doctors were reviewing patients. Relatives were praying. And babies were crying from different directions. The place sounded like a combination of church vigil, emergency room and election collation centre. 😭😂 Then one woman shouted: “DOCTORRRR!!!” Omo. Even though she wasn’t calling me, I answered in my mind. Because the scream entered my soul. 😭💔 The registrar looked at us and said: “Follow me.” We followed him like disciples following a prophet. He took us to see a woman in labour. The woman was pushing. Sweating. Breathing heavily. Fighting for her life. Meanwhile her husband was standing outside looking confused and powerless. For the first time in my life, I looked at childbirth and said: “Wait… people actually survive this thing?” 😭😂 Then the registrar asked: “What stage of labour is she in?” Immediately all the medical students looked at the ceiling. Maybe the answer was written there. It wasn’t. 😭😂 One brave student answered. The registrar nodded. The rest of us started respecting that student. Clearly he had read his notes. Unlike some of us that only highlighted headings. 😭💔 Then came the part that changed my life forever. A baby was delivered. The moment that baby cried… Everybody relaxed. The mother relaxed. The doctors relaxed. The nurses relaxed. Even the baby sounded relieved. 😭😂 Meanwhile me? I was standing there calculating how much suffering my own mother endured to bring me into this world. And suddenly all the trouble I had caused
