I play to figure things out. I play to learn something. Because if you play with a fear of failure or you play with the will to win that supersedes fear, I think it's a weakness either way. If you play with fear of failing, you'll capitulate to that fear. If you play with the sense of 'I want to win, I want to win,' then you have the fear of what happens if you don't. But if you find common ground in the center, you're unfazed by either. That enables you to stay in the moment and not feel anything other than what's in front of you." The interviewer asks: "How did you become someone who doesn't seem afraid of failing?" Kobe responds: "What does failure mean? It doesn't exist. It's a figment of your imagination." He explains with an analogy: "Let's use happy endings. Everybody wants a happy ending, right? Snow White finds her prince and lives happily ever after. Well, I call BS on that because two months later, they had an argument and he's sleeping on the couch. The point is: the story continues. So if you fail on Monday, the only way it's a failure is if you decide to not progress from that. If I fail today, I'm going to learn something from that failure and try again on Tuesday. That's why failure doesn't exist." The interviewer asks: "If you finished your career without a championship, would you have looked at that as a failure?" Kobe: "No. I would look at it as being extremely disappointed, because I had a dream and goals I wanted to accomplish. If I didn't accomplish those goals, I'd have to ask myself why. Poor leadership? Failure to communicate with my teammates? Lack of preparation? Those would be reasons why I didn't win. So I'd have to analyze that. And as I evolved post-basketball into business, those same weaknesses would reveal themselves there too. If I don't learn from that, I'm going to struggle again." He concludes: "I can take those situations and learn from them and have them make me a better person later in life. But if I don't take that stuff and apply it someplace else, that's failing. The worst possible thing you can ever do is to stop. It's to not learn."

Chi mi conosce sa che non parlo mai di calcio. Non mi interessa più da anni, quello che il calcio è diventato. Stavolta però faccio un’eccezione, perché quello che è successo non riguarda il calcio. Riguarda l’educazione. Il calcio, in sé, è irrilevante rispetto a ciò che davvero conta. Le partite passano, i risultati cambiano, le classifiche si aggiornano e il giorno dopo nessuno ricorda più nulla. Quello che resta sono i modelli. I gesti. I messaggi impliciti che milioni di ragazzi assorbono senza che nessuno glieli spieghi. Alessandro Bastoni ha simulato una caduta per un fallo che non c’era. L’arbitro ha creduto a quella simulazione ed ha espulso Kalulu. Di fatto un "errore" gravissimo, indotto dal comportamento scorretto di Bastoni. Ma la parte più grave non è questa. La parte più grave è ciò che è successo dopo. Le telecamere hanno inquadrato Bastoni mentre esultava. Non mentre si rialzava. Non mentre protestava. Esultava. Con la stessa espressione, la stessa rabbia, la stessa rivendicazione di chi ha appena segnato un gol decisivo. Come se ingannare fosse un merito. Come se falsare la realtà fosse un’impresa. Come se la vittoria dell’inganno fosse indistinguibile dalla vittoria del talento e del sacrificio. Questa immagine, questa, esattamente questa, è il problema. Perché non è solo un fotogramma. È un messaggio. È la rappresentazione plastica di un principio devastante: non importa come vinci, importa solo vincere. E se per vincere devi mentire, simula. Se devi ingannare, inganna. Se devi far espellere un altro con una scorrettezza, fallo. E poi esulta. Chi indossa una maglia non è solo un atleta. È un riferimento. Rappresenta un’idea. Rappresenta qualcosa che va oltre se stesso. Milioni di ragazzi guarderanno questa scena. La rivedranno sui social. La ritroveranno nei videogiochi. La imiteranno nei campetti. Non perché sono cattivi. Ma perché stanno imparando. E stanno imparando che l’inganno non solo è tollerato, ma è celebrato. Arriveranno le giustificazioni. L’adrenalina. La tensione. Il momento. Sciocchezze. La pressione non crea il gesto. Lo rivela. I valori non servono quando rispettarli è facile. Servono quando infrangerli converrebbe. È lì che si misura una persona. È lì che si misura un uomo. Onestamente, spero di non vederlo mai più indossare la maglia della nazionale. Personlmente ritengo debba essere radiato dal calcio. Non per punizione. Per coerenza. La maglia azzurra dovrebbe rappresentare il meglio. Dovrebbe essere data al più degno, non al più efficace nell’inganno. Il punto non è distruggere una carriera. Il punto è difendere un confine. Perché nel momento in cui l’inganno diventa spettacolo, e lo spettacolo diventa normalità, smette di educare e inizia a diseducare. Lo sport, quello vero, non serve a creare vincitori. Serve a creare persone che meritano di vincere.
