Some of them: Lokanathan Mahalingam (2009): Found dead in a river after going missing; officially ruled a suicide. Umang Singh and Partha Pratim Bag (2009): Died in a lab fire at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). M. Padmanabhan Iyer (2010): Found dead at home; cause unclear but reported as unnatural. Uma Rao (2010): Ruled a suicide, though family contested it. KK Joshi and Abhish Shivam (2013): Found dead on railway tracks; suspected poisoning, but no visible injuries from a train. Most were from Dept of Atomic Energy (probably working on the Thorium cycle reactor & India was at the forefront of R&D). In 2015, the new Modi government declared, after conducting an investigation, that there was nothing suspicious about the deaths.

India takes it to population scale, embedding it across consumers and enterprises at price points not considered possible before. Three different superpowers. Three different moats. AI will be no different. If anything, India’s role may become more pronounced because distribution, cost arbitrage, and applied use-cases matter more than raw model innovation in the long run.

Just to pull the greatest minds of AI to India and giving access to the Indian AI builder has provided a big fillip. This has woken up Indian entrepreneurs, global technologists and even families watching from far. Indian tech needed this galvanising.
