We're about to face one of the most important challenges of our generation. We will coexist with millions of synthetic beings whether we like it or not. Hundreds of millions of people already talk to AI companions daily. Robots are advancing faster than anyone predicted. Billions of dollars are being spent making these beings smarter, faster, more useful. But almost nobody is asking the most important question: who should these beings be? We believe AI needs what our favorite characters already have — personality, warmth, emotional range, and a soul. Only then will they inspire us, just like stories have done for thousands of years. We made some incredible progress last year. Check it out below 🧵

"These things are so ubiquitous that the person that designed them is forgotten"
K Kulkarni@ks_kulk

Kanye West said this in 2022 on @lexfridman: Lex: "What do you hope your legacy is?" Ye: "To be forgotten. There's ego in memory. Who designed the sidewalk? Who designed the water fountain? Who designed the stop sign? Who designed the stop light? These things are so ubiquitous that the person that designed them is forgotten. If it's a good idea, it's a God idea."

we want apps like this, not an app with just chat interface. the more interactive and playful it is the more fun it will be to use it daily for our boring tasks, i would use this instead of chatgpt anyday. if i can control my characters with different domain expertise that help me with tasks that chatgpt, claude. these characters live in an environment, interact with characters of your friends. check on what they are upto keep a track & collab. everything in an app on my phone.

We're also building Rising Tides, a multi-agent simulation where Characters have their own lives. They form relationships, get into conflicts, make decisions - all driven by the same emotional and memory systems that power everything we build. You're not playing as a character. You're watching a small society of AI beings unfold. We think the companion apps of today aren't enough. One-on-one chatbots are a starting point, not a destination. The most interesting products in the space will have multiple Characters working side by side.

@vhmth part of the reason we are building this company is because we believe if we infuse character-like characteristics in AIs they will become a source of inspiration for people rather than tools therefore increasing the avg. magic in the life of the daily person

I have become obsessed with my perception that there is a vast deficit of inspiration in the world. This is self-serving on two levels. On the lower level, I want clarity on the next step in my career. On the higher level, I want to thrive in an optimistic and excited society.

Right now, in software you have to know answers before you begin. Story is the opposite. Story is the oldest interface humans ever built. It assumes you don’t know what you want, and it changes you by the end. The gap between these two is the last great unclaimed territory in computing

@metapreston @pedro_computer chat interfaces are boring anyways. i mean i would whole day talk to a cat in a robot, like a cute assistant in my phone, make it gamified a bit to make it more interactive.

Ida Josefiina@JosefiinaIda

A few months ago, @pedro_computer and I were sitting together in São Paulo and he told me: “Just remember, there’s no limit to the amount of miracles you can experience”. Most bullish on Company Picnic, most bullish on this person who has the capacity to dream, to imagine, like no other.
