Only first-class leadership and culture seem to be associated with good UEC performance - and they are very hard to measure. But there is no doubt that inadequate numbers of staff and beds add to the problems of less good hospitals.

@RoyLilley @nursemaiden For many years, at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, a very small group of us campaigned for more beds and more hospital staff to run them. This was not really visionary thinking, given a growing and ageing UKpopulation. We were comprehensively ignored. @RCollEM @NHSGIRFT

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th. I am often asked why we do well in these rankings. I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice. The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature. There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

We need a mission to tackle this…

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. This is utter garbage. I believe in net zero. We need to get there. But renewables are not competitive. That’s why they are subsidised. Fossil fuel markets are highly competitive. It shouldn’t be hard to hold these two thoughts at the same time.

The obesity crisis itself is the societal failure, not its treatment with effective medications. And whilst I will always agree that public health efforts should come first, where are those efforts, exactly?

@DrAsifQasim I’m not an expert but know that there are other ways of treating diabetes and reducing obesity. We should start with public health measures and support general practices to work with patients eg @lowcarbGP and others who’ve achieved good results

Norway - sells oil & gas, but uses electricity mainly from renewables. 97% of new cars are electric and heat pumps are main source of heating. They're barely affected by what's happening in Iran. Their electricity costs going up 17%, ours going up 60% because we are so much more dependent on gas.
