Inspired by @NASAArtemis's frozen pee-soaked bathroom vent, I'd like to formally raise the argument that water should be reclassified as a mineral. Here's why: 1. Water in the form of ice dominates universally in interstellar molecular clouds and on cold dust grains (the raw material for stars and planets), ~99% of water exists as ice mantles condensed onto dust, with only ~1% as vapor. Liquid water can't form due to the ultra-low pressures and temperatures. Thus, water in its "natural" common state would be crystalline and most certainly mineral. 2. Comets, icy moons, Kuiper Belt objects, and protoplanetary disks are loaded with water ice (often low-density amorphous ice with some crystalline components). Even in "warm" regions, water tends to be vapor or quickly freezes when conditions allow. 3. The only major exceptions are: Superionic ice (a hot, black, dense phase under extreme pressure inside ice-giant planets like Uranus, Neptune, and likely many exoplanets). This bizarre type of "hot ice" might actually be one of the most abundant forms of water in the galaxy. 4. Places like Earth with surface or subsurface liquid oceans (e.g., on Europa or Enceladus) or transient surface liquids, are rare and tiny fractions compared to the total cosmic inventory.
