Typical cars burn 8 gallons (of 12-16 gallon tank) of gas idling same amount of time. Much more likely the gas cars ran out of gas than the Tesla ran out of power.

A tesla will get about 12 hours of heat on a full bat if its really cold. Not as big of a difference as you think. A tesla could keep you toasty with an electric blanket for over a week.
