Next time legislation like this comes up for a vote, we will fight in greater numbers to make our government work for everyone, not just for big business. Let’s all stay informed, speak out, and demand better from our leaders. Gov @GavinNewsom may have failed us this time, but if we all stand together, we won’t let it happen again.

SB 1047 had the backing of AI safety groups, responsible tech orgs and many unions.
By vetoing it, Newsom sided with Big Tech, billionaire-backed VC firms & the Chamber of Commerce.

AI can and will be used for so much good. But just like we’ve seen with social media, there could also be seriously damaging side effects if governments don’t lay down some rules. I was hoping to see California step up and lead the way with #SB1047. And while I’m disappointed to see the bill vetoed, I’m also truly inspired to have seen so many people stand up and raise their voices in support of it. Next time AI legislation like this is up for a vote, we’ll be back in force to get it over the finish line.

Despite widespread support from AI creators, the public, labor unions, and most Californians, Governor @GavinNewsom decided to veto #SB1047. Like it or not, Newsom’s explanation echoes the influence fossil fuel industries have had over politicians in the past, or the chemical industry’s method of delaying regulation of “forever chemicals” by claiming they were an “economic driver.” This is dangerous thinking and has led to catastrophic outcomes time and again.
This bill was unique in addressing catastrophic risks to all of us from AI models, and it sought to regulate the entire industry.
The need for comprehensive AI regulation remains urgent and unresolved. If Governor Newsom won’t act, others must.

The more I read the words of these #SB1047 opponents, the more I'm convinced they've never read the bill. The only people talking about "science fiction" risks are the lobbyists opposing the bill. #RTFB
