In the late 1800s, Harriet Cole, a cleaning woman (likely African American) at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia (now part of Drexel University), died of tuberculosis at age 35 in 1888. She reportedly willed her body to science, specifically to anatomy professor Dr. Rufus B. Weaver. Over nearly six months (or about five months and 900+ hours), Weaver meticulously dissected and extracted her entire cerebrospinal nervous system—the first complete one ever achieved. He preserved it with lead-based paint and mounted it on a blackboard with thousands of pins, naming the specimen "Harriet." The display gained fame, winning medals at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and has educated generations. Today, over 130 years later, it remains preserved behind glass at Drexel University College of Medicine, in the same building where she once worked.
