The first pic is an epitome of the chalta hai mediocrity that is an incurable national disease now. That carpet has been laid out in the most shabby manner possible and it looks ratty or perhaps tacky and rundown. Is this sort of effort worthy of a state visit? These are trifles but high quality is attained only when all trifles are taken care of. Look at this pic from the Japanese Parliament. They don’t leave even the position of tea cups to chance. India is a prosperous country that radiates an air of decrepitude and we beam approvingly at such things under the all forgiving phrase, “By Indian Standards.” Which means none at all… or a fatalistic acceptance that we are always meant to be second rate. This won’t do. A lack of an aesthetic sense is always a symptom of deeper failures in the psyche. Then look at the tilted shoulders of the honor guard. And look at Putin who is old enough to be his father and still ramrod straight. I was told when walking behind a VIP in dheemi chaal, such tilts happen sometimes. Why should they? It is unsightly and ugly and a little training can fix it. But we accept hota hain and of course By Indian Standards. The fellow looks like the weight of the sword is going to make him fall over. When it came to the farcical rooster cock displays at the Wagah border post, now thankfully called off, we made sure our men were upright. But for a state visit, titled shoulders. That shabby carpet and that unbalanced honor guard are both matters of concern. We let the little things slide – like checking if an airline is in compliance, and then we have a national crisis.
