I guess it’s best to treat it like a junior engineer who you can have help with smaller tasks where you know the right solution but could save some time.

@stillwritescode @dinbuilds I don’t know if I’d fully agree. While I’m writing things manual I’m simultaneously getting familiar with the codebase and tracing everything. Codex feels like being thrown into someone else’s stuff and feels slower to me.

Begging people to learn the difference between GenAI and procedural/ other types of AI. AI at base is not the problem. AI models trained on stolen works is. No, Minecraft procedurally generated worlds are not GenAI. At least learn what you’re actually fighting against.

@dinbuilds Codex is too much for me 😂 I can’t comprehend or wrap my mind around so much code being generated so quickly.

I am. My boss, a lawyer, just told me how he coded a new version of their timesheet app. He let Claude publish straight to GitHub, and then to a web app on Azure. My boss never touches the code locally. I would feel unneeded in that loop. The app works, on web and mobile, and you can upload a receipt and attach it to an expense item.

I can imagine at least two wildly different outcomes. But it largely depends on whether or not people are unreasonably alarmist like we were about nuclear energy.

People want to pretend it's 'oh your hatred is just luddite, you'd have hated the camera...' blah blah. No. It's just I know where the path leads.

The thing is we were always being rushed to produce code with a bunch of technical debt before, and now we can just work faster. That lets us take the time to produce better code, tests, documentation, etc.

@RottN16th @KiraAurora_VT It's not just vibe coders or AI agents. Devs make heavy use of gen AI tools within their editors, even within code review/PRs. Industry is pushing more and more Gen AI use in coding. Which is back to my question, do you think it is acceptable to use Gen AI for creating code?

@RottN16th @Iced_IMP @KiraAurora_VT Yeah well most of us don’t code in Assembly language either and there were always purists making this argument about every higher level language and framework along the way. This is just a new level of abstraction.

@Iced_IMP @KiraAurora_VT i do look, its still not ideal long-term. Soon enough people will overrely and not even figure what is wrong with their generated code or where the problem started with. Oh Ai Agents is a thing now, but you still check and put shit manually anyways so lol.

@RottN16th @Iced_IMP @KiraAurora_VT All of us. I’ve been coding for like 27 years now, 15 or so of those have been professionally. Plenty of us use AI. Vibe coding is what you call using AI without reviewing the output. That’s not what most of us are doing.

If anything it’s democratizing access to various skills. A few small companies could have created this and kept it for themselves and we’d never have known.

That point is 100% accurate. I don't understand how that is "crippling the west" I think I lost a lot of context here.

@blitz_writes @whizz_xD More like - building an idea for an app or website is half the battle. You still need to know how to do marketing, sales, etc, or you just have a product with nobody to sell it to. Without a budget or luck, you’re still facing an uphill battle when it comes to making money.

literally close to zero percent. the percent of the general public you report as being less interesting than GPT or Claude is almost a 1:1 self report of your own narcissism level
