Well this is a pretty full throated endorsement!
To me still looks more like strong diamagnetism than absolute flux pinning (see how it wobbles), and I also don't thing strong diamagnetism is a guarantee of superconductivity!

Either this is a very well-done fake, or we really did just enter the era of room temperature superconductors. What is seen here (stable levitation above a dipole magnet) can *only* be a result of flux pinning. If the sample was a previously known low temp SC that had been chilled—at this tiny size—it would quickly warm and quench. Also, no sign of condensation in the air.

Meaning, there aren’t any non-superconducting regions, just a an imperfect meissner effect in a true superconductor

All superconductors have their limitations and non-superconducting regions is not the theoretically correct way to think about it. Especially in the context of elemental type ii

@dbarawn @QuantumJos @ralfrpatterson @CosmoWenman @andrewmccalip Flux pinning in type II superconductors is structural because of flux lines, and not due to imperfections. Perfect Elemental superconductors like vanadium are still type ii.

@QuantumJos @ralfrpatterson @CosmoWenman @andrewmccalip I should point out there's a bit of silly terminology distinction here, though: flux pinning is, after all, an incomplete Meissner effect, but then you think about it as non-superconducting regions in a superconductor.

@alexkaplan0 Diamagnetism is not the same as meissner effect though. Wouldn’t flux pinning by floating it underneath the magnet be a more definitive way to test? Maybe it could be ground into a powder and some pieces would flux lock under a magnet. What am I missing?

@majohmo @alexkaplan0 @condensed_the @kchangnyt Meissner effect is a better test than resistance. Meissner lets you determine what fraction of the material is SC. Resistance is easy to screw up and even if correct would only tell you if there is a percolating path.

My current reasons to / not to believe:
WE'RE BACK:
* Diamagnetism is pretty rare and the Meissner effect is a key way to measure SC in a bulk heterogenous material
* We've seen multiple ~confirmations of diamagnetism
* DFT calculations are good (small update)

@zebulgar Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to flux pin the rocks under a magnet rather than float the rocks on top? If it's really a type-ii semiconductor flux pinning seems like the definitive test, whereas floating on top could just be diamagnetism. What am I missing here?

I have heard at least a half-dozen modern-era public intellectuals say some version of: "I got a (1020) SAT score, and yet I have received many prestigious awards. This shows that these tests are meaningless."
