Artemis II just happened. Here’s what it really means for SpaceX and Elon Musk. NASA successfully completed the first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years. Four astronauts flew around the Moon, went behind the far side, set a new distance record from Earth (~406,000 km), and safely splashed down on April 10, 2026. Sounds impressive — and it is. But let’s be real. This mission had zero involvement from SpaceX. The rocket was SLS, the spacecraft was Orion — both developed by NASA and Lockheed Martin at enormous cost. SpaceX was not part of Artemis II at all. So where does Elon fit into this? SpaceX enters the picture starting with Artemis III (currently planned for 2027–2028). That’s when NASA will use the Starship Human Landing System (HLS) as the actual lunar lander. Starship will carry astronauts from lunar orbit down to the surface and back. Elon’s real plans (what he’s actually pushing for): • Turn Starship into the primary transportation system for the Moon — reusable, high-cadence, and dramatically cheaper than SLS. • Build a sustainable lunar presence (base/camp) using multiple Starship landings. • Use the Moon as a proving ground and stepping stone for the ultimate goal: Mars colonization. • Long-term vision: regular cargo and crew flights to Mars, in-situ resource utilization (making fuel on Mars), and eventually self-sustaining cities. Elon has been openly critical of the current SLS approach for years, calling it too slow and expensive. He sees Artemis as a government program that still relies on old, costly technology — while Starship is designed to make spaceflight routine and affordable. Bottom line, no illusions: Artemis II is a genuine technical success for NASA — first crewed deep-space mission since Apollo. Respect where it’s due.
