For a mix of reasons, California has decimated its local oil production. As a result, it’s now producing only about 300,000 barrels a day. But as the economy grows and the population expands, oil demand continues to rise. The state now uses about 1.4 million barrels a day, which means roughly 1.1 million barrels must be imported. Just shy of half of that comes from Persian Gulf producers who suddenly can’t get crude to market. The California energy shortage is imminent. If the state can’t refine enough locally, it must ship fuel in from elsewhere in the country. And since there’s no pipeline to transport oil or refined products across the Rockies, that means moving it by truck or rail. The results are significant product shortages—and, more importantly, higher prices for the West Coast. I’ve said this before, and I’ll underline it again: this problem doesn’t go away with a peace deal. It only resolves when the Persian Gulf is safe again—and then, years later, when these fields can reopen and start shipping. That’s not happening this year, and it’s probably not happening next year either. #iranwar #crudeoil #geopolitics

INCREDIBLY short-sighted decision by Mountain West to move media at the conference tourney from the traditional courtside location to behind a basket with an obstructed view. Only impacts me this year (thank goodness SDSU is leaving this two-bit league for the Pac-12), but still.
