"That by desiring what is perfectly good, even when we don't quite know what it is and cannot do what we would, we are part of the divine power against evil—widening the skirts of light and making the struggle with darkness narrower." — George Eliot, Middlemarch

Same house, three different color schemes. I know which one I’m picking. You?

I recently introduced myself at an event as: "Hi, I'm Karen, and I'm on a crusade to bring books back into reading curriculum." As it came out of my mouth, I realized how insane it sounds.

in preschool they asked my mom (a doctor) to teach helmet safety. my dad bought 2 cantaloupes, drew faces on them, and my mom dropped them—one helmeted, one not. the unhelmeted one exploded on the class. mom said, “this is why you wear a helmet.” she was not invited back.

Females of the conservative/Christian bookish/artsy X: do you know people like you in real life? My husband has been blessed by meeting multiple like-minded creatives/thinkers nearby. But I’ve struggled to find likeminded women (in this regard) in person.

6th, to categorize analysis as an impractically “elite” & even “snobbish” skill & not the key to protecting your mind & heart as you strengthen your knowledge & understanding. 7th, to treat knowledge & understanding as merely pragmatic & not the utmost call of the human heart.

Just last week, a self-proclaimed ‘unschooler’ said: “Why should kids have to analyze Shakespeare if they don’t like it & won’t do anything with literature later in life?” TBH, I was stunned into silence… 1st, to assume that lit is a career choice & not a cultural foundation..

If you think Shakespeare "alienates" students, consider how "alienated" they feel later in life when references are made to Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet & they don't understand. A lot of things are unfamiliar or difficult for students. That isn't a reason to stop teaching them.

Caught this magical view recently, over the river on the way to church. I don’t think I’ve seen in person before such a stunning depiction of the water cycle in action.

"This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, sunset, dawn & gloaming, on sea & continents & islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls." ~ John Muir

@Angela_Otwell Haha, I didn’t assume that. But interesting to consider overlapping interests and how to use those to make connections!

@underbrightwing Not "competing" groups. I joined a group that went to restaurants and a group that put together meals for Ronald McDonald House once a month. I think I went to an outdoor "light hiking" group. In a small city like that, I tended to see the same people in a variety of groups.

@Angela_Otwell We found a group like this that meets 2+ hrs away! It’s such a gift, we go every 1-2mos, for yrs now. Those people are like family. For various reasons we haven’t started one in our city, though it’s on our radar. 1 reason is not knowing likeminded ppl to invite to begin with.

@underbrightwing I was in a position (years ago and not where I live now) to start a "Creative Christians" group and advertise it on Meetup. I met a lot of people and also grew that little church a bit. Some of you might be in a position to do something similar -

@ClairedeLuned @paulbullard @KingAriPress Yes! I’m in the mid-south so definitely appreciate a higher level of Christian culture than in the west. But the trade off tends to be more closed-offness or just disinterest to arts/academics than I saw in the west. :/

@underbrightwing Also often true of the more liberal/Christian bookish/artsy X, types, too, as I’ve been told.

@swordnsong15 Or if they do, often land in other camps. Like the women I know who are outspoken Tolkien fans are often the comic-con crowd. Which is so fun! And I enjoy their company. But I’m not quite a fit for their group either cause I don’t keep up with the sci-fi/anime/etc

@swordnsong15 Winning some to the cause - great outlook! I’ve wondered if Tolkien’s role in this plays a part. Many men are drawn together over his work. That’s one core interest of my husband’s friend group. But women either don’t fan-girl over Tolkien the same way…
