Alaska’s experience shows why the hepatitis B birth dose is essential. Weakening or delaying the birth dose risks undoing decades of progress—especially in rural Alaska. Senator Mike Lee is not trying to sell Park Service lands or ‘end the Park Service as we know it.’ Those who are claiming that should know better and need to knock it off. He filed an amendment to strike a well-meaning provision of the Interior Appropriations bill that would have unintended consequences for routine Park Service actions. There is enough to debate in our Interior bill but mischaracterizations of issues don’t help.

Twelve years ago today, I was informed the Interior Department would be rejecting a short, one-lane, gravel road to connect King Cove to Cold Bay. That was a horrible setback, and the community has endured more than 200 medevacs since then. But we didn’t give up; we pushed on, and this year, a land exchange agreement was finally completed. Here on December 23, 2025, I’m thinking about the good people of King Cove—and hopeful their life-saving road will be a reality in the very near future.

Late last year, I voted to proceed to debate on two resolutions that would have terminated the escalation of U.S. military operations against Venezuela absent explicit authorization from Congress. I took these votes because I believed the administration failed to provide Congress with the information necessary to fully evaluate the legal basis for these escalating actions. That was true then, and it remains true today. It is also true that Nicolás Maduro is a dictator who has ruthlessly oppressed the people of Venezuela for more than a decade, with a regime marked by election manipulation and the detention of political opponents. The United States does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, and there has been a warrant out for his arrest for drug-related crimes in the United States since 2020. While I am hopeful that this morning’s actions have made the world a safer place, the manner in which the United States conducts military operations, as well as the authority under which these operations take place, is important. When the Senate returns to Washington next week, Congress has been informed that we will receive additional briefings from the administration on the scope, objectives, and legal basis for these operations.

I continue to hope the administration’s rhetoric on Greenland is nothing more than posturing for a new era of cooperation, because any effort to claim or take the territory by force would degrade both our national security and our international relationships. We have a long history of close cooperation with Greenland, dating back to World War II and continuing today with the Pituffik Space Base, and have always been able to achieve our mutual goals through strong diplomacy with its people. As Greenland charts its future, we must see it as an ally, not an asset, and focus on continued partnership rather than possession.
