I still don't understand who this is for. It's going to be less powerful than a PS5, a year ahead of a potential PS6 release, and will be priced higher than a console, but cannot be upgraded. People would be better off buying a low end PC they can upgrade or waiting for a PS6 🤷‍♂️

Valve says it's "bummed" about the Steam Machine being delayed due to RAM and memory shortages, per PC Gamer "We're doing our best to make sure that we can make the product and have it still available at as good and competitive a price as we can"

@theartbookguy It is the introduction to the Linux ecosystem for the non tech-savy people. The bias towards Linux being too complicated will end with this machine. Once people get free from subscriptions, bad consumer practices of Sony/MS they will judge things differently going forward.

@uralm But for the non tech-savy people are looking to play games, there is no reason to get this because there's almost no use case for it, so they won't get an introduction to Linux. Marketing it using Linux won't work, nor will the price or power, so who is it for?

@theartbookguy Where does the assumption "there is no use case" come from? It has a solid use case. A desktop PC is a desktop PC. simply not comfortable enough to spend hours on a chair, playing a story based games. This closes the gap between your chair and sofa.

@uralm But who is it for? A console player can already buy a more powerful machine, with new ones around the corner. A PC player will stick to what they have as it can be upgraded. The next Xbox will also be a hybrid machine, but as it will have more power, it is more future-proofed

@Nassergamez @uralm But a Steam vet would already have a PC. That would be like Sony or Xbox releasing a weaker console and saying "but it's smaller". Steam Deck made sense because it's a handheld, but if a PC player is looking for a console, those exist, or you could buy an upgradable pre-built PC

@theartbookguy @Nassergamez Can you read your artbooks, CBRs, PDF's on your PS5 or XBOX in their current form? Or can you watch something torrented? I don't own a modern console, so I don't know about the available apps for those purposes.

@uralm @Nassergamez I buy physical, but for anything like that, there are many other options. Regardless, outside of portability and the OS, I've not seen a reason to get a SM over an upgradable PC, because if it's not cheap with its old tech, why lock yourself into it
