For almost 2000 years, "Palestine" was simply a European Christian term for the "Holy Land" or "Land of Israel" That is why the British chose "Palestine" as the name of the mandate "Palestine" is a foreign, colonial label. The idea it has local historical roots is just stupid

In any case, the people who appropriated the name Palestine to themselves today are descended from largely Arab migrants from the neighbouring region. The claim they were indigenous to Palestine is one BIG Lie their Arab brotherhood successfully packaged to the world together with their oil.

@mishtal Besides Herodotus and Aristobulus, other Greek historians who used the word Palestine to refer to Canaan were Aristotle, Polybius, and Plutarch. The Roman historians Suetonius and Tacitus also used the word Palestine to refer to Canaan.

@mishtal Herodotus also indicated that Palestine was inhabited by many Semitic peoples: Jews, Arameans, Arabs, Samaritans, and Phoenicians. He further mentioned that the city of Gaza was governed by an Arab leader.

@mishtal The Philistines were in any case Canaanites or Greeks, whereas the Palestinians in more recent times were Arabs (Muslims, Christians...) and Jews.

@mishtal The ancient Greek historian Herodotus, from the 5th century Before of Christ, noted in his book Histories that Palestine was a region located between southern Syria and the northern Arabian Peninsula.

@mishtal Claiming something called Palestine should replace Israel because it was proposed by the United Nations is like claiming Mesopotamia should replace Iraq since it was proposed by the League of Nations.

@mishtal Eusebius said that in 135 CE the Roman emperor Hadrian renamed the area of Judah,Judea and Samaria as Syria/Palestina(Roman province) to infuriate the jews and remind them of their ancient enemy the phillistines. Robert Spencer said that the 1929 Palestine Post referred to Jews.

@mishtal The name Palestine comes from the roman name which comes from the Peleset (egyptian: 𓊪𓏲𓂋𓏤𓏤𓐠𓍘𓇋𓍑) or Palastu, Pilišti, or Pilistu (Akkadian: 𒉺𒆷𒀸𒌓, 𒉿𒇷𒅖𒋾, and 𒉿𒇷𒅖𒌓) who settled the area in 1175 BC.

@mishtal The "Roman invention" claim ignores history. "Palestine" appears in 12th-century BCE Egyptian records (Peleset) and 5th-century BCE Greek texts (Palaistiné) long before Hadrian. Arabs have used "Filastin" since the 7th century, including the 1911 Arab-run Filastin newspaper.

@mishtal It's complete nonesense to say that it was a name particularly used by Christians. This was the classical nams for the region. Moreover, Palestine was also the name used by English speaking Jews, or have you not heard of the Palestinian Talmud? (Jerusalem Talmud is a modern name)

@mishtal Are you on drugs? The region has been geographically and administratively identified as Palestine during the Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Ottoman eras. This is amply attested in historical maps and sources.

@mishtal "Palestine" was a name given the area by the ancient Greeks based on the Egyptian "Peleset", neither of whom were Christian, originating in 1150 BCE. But then, you already knew that. Why lie? Are you that desperate? (Yes. Yes he is.)
