Many people in the UK feel like they've lost control. They don't recognize the high street, they don't understand the economy, and they feel their own cultural traditions are mocked. The politician who validates that projection—"You're right, you are losing your country, and it's their fault"—offers a form of catharsis. It's an emotional painkiller for the dislocation of modernity, even if it's a lethal addiction for the body politic.
