ADL Philadelphia, @AJCGlobal Philadelphia/Southern NJ, and @JFedinPhilly share the EEOC’s commitment to combating antisemitism and protecting Jewish employees from discrimination and harassment on college campuses and we appreciate that the EEOC has undertaken a number of critical investigations to help do just that. We are, however, concerned about the privacy and constitutional implications of any effort (even those that are well-intentioned) to force the production of a list of Jewish faculty, staff, and students by religious affiliation, along with confidential responses from participants in Penn’s internal Antisemitism Task Force. History has taught us to be vigilant when governments compile lists of people based on religious identity, and we hope that the EEOC’s important work can continue without such a list.

We're heartened that a Maryland man who sent threatening mail to Jewish institutions — including here in Philadelphia — has pled guilty. We've been in touch with the local community affected, and we hope this brings closure to them. In the latest problematic ICE recruitment post from the X account of the Department of Homeland Security, the phrase “Which way, American man” accompanies an image of Uncle Sam at a crossroads, with road signs pointing in one direction to “cultural decay” and “invasion” and in another direction to “homeland” and “opportunity.” Not only does the image basically equate migrants in the U.S. with “cultural decay” and “invasion,” but also the accompanying text clearly evokes the title of early 20th century white supremacist and antisemite William Gayley Simpson’s book Which Way, Western Man? In that book, which is popular with neo-Nazis and other white supremacists, Simpson argued that Western civilization was in decline and that Blacks and Jews (as well as Asians) threatened the very existence of the white race. A U.S. government agency should not resort to using such language and imagery for any purpose, let alone recruiting people to serve.

We are deeply alarmed by reports and videos from Syria’s As-Suwayda region of brutal violence targeting members of the Druze community — including beatings, humiliation, and executions – reportedly carried out by groups affiliated with the Syrian government. Efforts to repress minority communities like the Druze will not bring stability to Syria and only serve to fuel chaos and deepen societal divisions. The international community must use all available diplomatic tools, including with the Syrian government, to protect the Druze and other minorities across Syria, and ensure the government stops supporting this repressive violence.
