No charges were filed, and that is part of the story, but it is not the whole story, because elections are not decided by legal thresholds, they are decided by whether voters believe someone’s judgment, temperament, and consistency match the level of power they are seeking. That is where this becomes unavoidable. When someone exercises sweeping authority over millions of people, telling them how to live, who to see, and what risks they are allowed to take, voters are going to ask whether that same person lives by a consistent standard when it comes to their own decisions and their own behavior.
