Since happiness feels relative to the individual, shouldn’t it be bounded by morality and ethics? In a world full of fakes and self-deception, someone might claim that cheating with another man’s wife or indulging in any fleeting thrill brings them happiness. But is that true happiness, or merely temporary pleasure? This is why virtually every religion and ethical tradition upholds a moral framework that benefits life and considers the well-being of others. Our pursuit of happiness should be guided by these rails. Otherwise, what we derive may feel like “happiness,” but it is not the real thing. Lastly, as St. Augustine famously said: our hearts are made for God, and until we find Him, we shall remain restless.
