“You’re the only family I need,” she said, then leaned up and kissed his cheek softly. “Come on, we look silly standing here like this,” she said, then moved to put her hand in his and start pulling him from the middle of the room.

“Not with how things are right now,” she said, almost a sad tone to her voice, “I wanted to, you know? When we were younger. Before the war.”

She frowned at him and shook her head. “You know better than to ask me that, James. I’m not interested in that. Nobody really. . . clicks with me like that, and it’s okay. It’s understandable. I could be their grandma. Gosh, their 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 grandma.” She sighed a little bit. —

“Just in work clothes a lot, you know? I like when you think I’m pretty.” She shrugged small, as if she were a little shy to admit. “It’s just. . . nice.”

“Sometimes you do, that’s true. I just think it’s still rare when you see me as something more… feminine. Feel like you don’t get to a whole lot.”

Stephanie held onto him tighter this time when she was brought back in, her smile one of full devotion to her best guy. “Mm, rare to get a compliment from you like that ~ but thank you. Guess it’s been a while since I’ve got to get out of the suit and it something fitting.”

“Are you trying to tell me I look 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺, James Buchanan?” she asked with a gentle smile and a small quirk of her brow.

“You know how many times I’ve heard you say that?” she asked, letting her fingers brush through the hair at the base of his neck. “Enough that you’d think I’d be used to it by now.”
