Punch brings many of us smiles and moments of lightness, and I understand why. His little face, his playful energy, the way he clings to his plushie — it touches something soft in us.
But I also want to remember the whole truth. Punch is a baby who was taken from his mother far too early. He was raised with a toy instead of the warmth and teaching only a mother can give. Every cute clip we watch is built on the stress and trauma of a tiny being who never got to live the life he was born for.
So when I smile at Punch, I also carry a quiet ache. I smile with gratitude for the people who care for him now, and with sadness for everything he lost before he ever had a chance.
May we never forget that behind the daily joy we receive from him, there is a small soul who deserves freedom, family, and the chance to simply be an orangutan — not our source of comfort.
Let’s hold both: the smile and the sorrow. That feels like the most honest way to love him.
