Tonight my wife and I decided to count how many letters in the alphabet can be relied on for consistency of pronunciation.
It turns out that only v and r can?
Letter - usage - inconsistency
A – cat → any
B – bat → debt
C – cat → city
D – dog → duty
E – bed → me
F – fan → of
G – go → giant
H – hat → honest
I – sit → time
J – jam → hallelujah
K – kite → knight
L – lip → walk
M – man → mnemonic
N – net → autumn
O – hot → go
P – pen → psychology
Q – queen → unique
R – red → ?
S – sun → rose
T – top → nation
U – cup → unit
V – van → ?
W – wet → write
X – box → xylophone
Y – yes → gym
Z – zoo → Nazi

Last night my wife and I tried to come up with all the ways in which ‘ough’ can be pronounced. 1. rough (uff) 2. through (oo) 3. thought (aw) 4. plough (ow) 5. cough (off) 6. though (oh) 7. thorough (uh) 8. hiccough (up) 9. lough (och) Non-stop excitement in our house, clearly.
