I’m a new college student that likes to play games like Skylanders and Cookie run and loves to draw. I hope to be an animator or a character designer.

@tallcowyt Thank you for being the one to help bring this issue into the spotlight enough for Discord to address the issue, but some users are saying it’s not completely as they’re still flagged or banned. I know it might take time to properly review over 8,400 complaints manually by human.

Thank you guys so much for 4m views on this post. Never expected it to go viral in the first place, and the fact that even Discord ended up QRTing it is insane to me!! I’m glad to have played a role in getting this issue resolved 😇

There’s currently a vulnerability in Discord’s AI moderation that detects any and all square grid images, such as spreadsheets, chessboards, Minecraft inventories, white & gray transparent backgrounds… as CSAM and will permanently ban your account. To keep your account safe, I would recommend NOT sending any sort of images anywhere until this vulnerability is fixed. If you are a server owner or admin, I would highly recommend to disable all image and gif/embed perms in your server for the time being. To @discord @discord_support, this vulnerability needs to be fixed immediately with all false bans overturned. Additionally, AI moderation needs to be scrapped and replaced with humans. This is exactly why companies shouldn’t be using clankers to decide whether accounts should be banned or not. Losing a Discord account to something as unfair as this can be extremely devastating and affect users severely, and every day millions of users are affected by false AI bans. This needs to be stopped. If you would like to spread awareness about this, feel free to like & repost.

@jalibx @discord_support It said the 200 was this weekend. It’s grammatically correct but it is still pretty disgusting to say something is fixed when it hasn’t by the evidence throughout the thread. It still showed an accurate estimation through nearly 3 months, but still need to ditch the problem bot.

This weekend, our safety systems incorrectly triggered and banned around 200 accounts. Everyone affected has been reinstated. Here's what happened. A thread 🧵

@naranchans @Tyrvana @Pirat_Nation Same. I just hate the anxiety this spurred in me cause I had one incident where it took over a year to get my old account back from a scam report. Took forever to get it back to my original email. I pray that they learned from this incident and genuinely try to fix the issues.

Discord has cleared up the rumor that posting grid-style images could get your account permanently banned. The company said a bug in its moderation system mistakenly flagged some images with grid patterns, including spreadsheets, chessboards, and even Minecraft inventory screenshots, as illegal content. A second bug also stopped some of those accounts from being automatically restored. According to Discord, about 200 accounts were wrongly banned over the weekend, and all of them have now been reinstated. The company also revealed the same issue affected more than 8,200 accounts between May and last week, and every one of those accounts has now been restored. Discord apologized for the mistake, confirmed the bug has been fixed, and said it’s updating its systems to help prevent similar false bans in the future.

@naranchans @Tyrvana @Pirat_Nation People are showing they’re still banned now but I’m trying to be optimistic and guessing they’re attempting to manually remove them now, so it’s going to take a while to get to all the ignored tickets after being in loop bot hell.

@Tyrvana @Pirat_Nation the next reply explains it to be fair. they said there was a bug that would just ban them instead of pausing it and then when they tried to unban people it would just keep them in purgatory

@Tyrvana @Pirat_Nation Supposedly, a bug in the review process gave the bot that scans the images the ability to ban them based on PhotoDNA without the human input. I’d still be careful about posting grids but it’s very disappointing that due to a lack of proper safety moderation, we’re getting Aminoed

@Pirat_Nation According to discord all their flags are reviewed before taking actions so how could there have been 200 falsely banned accounts?

@RabbitMario1 @discord_support And I’m glad they addressed it. People are still upset as they’re still flagged or banned, but I understand it takes a while to manually remove the bans. Especially if it’s over 8,400 users that were affected.

We know that's not a satisfying explanation if this was your account, and we should have caught this sooner. We're working on better safeguards so this can't quietly happen again, and more broadly, on making sure our safety systems don't penalize people who did nothing wrong. If something still feels off with your account, reply here.

@RabbitMario1 @discord_support I’m sorry. But they should replace the bot messages and not give it the ability to mark an unresolved issue as “solved” but have it sorted and held till a human moderator can address it. Or at least reasonably flag something and wait till humans determine it is a violation.

@CreativeMadiCat @discord_support auto detection is how this sort of thing HAS to work, they can’t have people individually moderating every single sent image across the entire platform, not only is that an invasion of privacy but impractical, you’re confusing an auto detection algorithm with generative ai

@svishnevskiy @discord @discord_support I understand that it will take time to manually reinstate banned accounts affected by this issue, but take this as a sign that using AI moderation is not a substantial way to conduct safety measures. You need to abandon this venture and get a real safety team that can help.

I want to apologize for a bug we fixed that over the weekend wrongly banned ~200 users over grid-like images, and ~8,000 more since May over other benign images. Everyone affected has now been unbanned. Learn more about how happened from this @discord_support thread.

@discord_support Use some of that money to hire real people to make these types of calls and not an AI bot that can get spontaneous abilities to ban users. And please have humans respond to the help tickets and not a bot that will mark issues as solved when you did jack all.

@discord_support Thank you for the fix but this should be a sign that AI is unreliable and you all as a company should take this as a lesson. Don’t trust programs that have the possibility to fail. It’s time to trash the AI and hire real people to moderate instead of “algorithm don’t know box”.

@laserdog10 @discord_support My best guess is that they’re manually removing the bans to explain why so many are still banned despite the fix. I’m not making excuses for them, but I’m trying to rationalize why it’s taking so long to remove over 8,400 bans or flags. We can’t trust their AI to do that.

@discord Can we have an update where people are not flagged or banned for posting images containing grids cause your Moderation AI is flagging them as CSAM, so people are loosing accounts for it. Like Minecraft inventory or game UIs. We do not want to walk on eggshells around you.

@DegesusWife @GWEOfficialNews I just said they claimed it fixed but to still be weary about it as there were still reports being made. Linked the tweet too so they could see the thread and it’s posted evidence.

@GWEOfficialNews I’m going to hold on posting art for a while cause these reports are still happening. I’m weary about links to images as they might detect it having these “dangerous content”. Until they make a public statement with evidence that it’s fixed, I don’t trust them.

@discord @discord_support Speaking of bans, can you please do something about the banning incidents on your platform as your moderation AI is falsely flagging images with grid patterns as dangerous child content. Either figure out what’s going on with the algorithm and publicly show it’s fixed or get help

🛠️For our admins & server owners Mod View now works for non-members, incl. kicked & banned users, so you don't lose context on past cases. We've also moved the Audit Log to make it easier to see at first glance.
