Gun stuff 5, a series. Getting old. I've put this off for a few posts, but the time has come. I'm going to talk about my main EDC, and the why of it. This is in no way intended to either influence your decision or justify my own. What this is intended to do, is show you the drivers for the decision, to perhaps spark some reflection before you buy. Firearm: Colt Detective Special, .38 Special, 6 round capacity, manufactured 1969. Ammo: 158g full wadcutter. I can hear the outrage now from the tacticrap crowd. I'm a FUDD, a Boomer, what the hell do I know (I'm neither). Here is the rationale behind this choice. Manual of arms: I am a fairly experienced shooter,with a variety of pistols, both revolver and semi auto available. The DS has the simplest manual of arms possible. Why does this matter? Because I am 60, and perfectly healthy. However, time will begin to catch me one day, and on that day, I want the manual of arms that fits both my muscle memory and decline. I will decline, it comes to us all, and facing that is better than failing it. Method of carry: I pocket carry. Discrete holsters have never worked for me. They irritate and slow me down. A revolver in my pocket disappears, remains upright. And putting my hand into the top of my jeans pocket is a perfectly natural move. With my thumb across the hammer it is a snag free draw, and the colt grips index in my hand in the same way every time. Discretion: If I am forced to use my carry someday, I am acutely aware that even in this part of Florida, there are legions of lawyers awaiting the chance to avenge the killing of some future scientist and bleed my rather miniscule savings dry. A revolver does not dump brass on the ground, which potentially gives me time to leave the scene immediately,if for some reason that appears to be the preferred course of action. This may well contravene ethics, law, and your own righteousness for some of you, but I am far too old to believe in righteousness as anything other than a for hire proposition. You, on the other hand, may believe anything you like. Disengagement on my terms. Ammunition: Wadcutters smash bone, and impart energy very efficiently in doing so. Place one say, in a hip, and the problem will very likely just fold like a deck chair, and disengagement is at hand. It's an old school solution, but I am old school, and it suits my (dis)engagement model. That's enough for now. Hopefully it provoked some thought. More to follow.
