‼️For immediate release—Big news for NAGA’s historic lawsuit in New York‼️ The U.S. Department of Education has ruled that a Long Island school district violated federal civil rights law when it erased its Native American “Thunderbirds” mascot just to comply with New York’s state ban. Federal officials were clear: they will not allow ideologues to decide that some mascots based on national origin are acceptable while Native American ones are banned, and that equal treatment under the law is non‑negotiable. This is exactly what NAGA has been saying from day one. New York’s so‑called “mascot ban” does not protect Native people – it singles us out and erases us while other identities and symbols stay in place. The federal government’s finding now confirms that forcing schools to drop Native imagery because it is Native is discriminatory under Title VI, echoing the 14th Amendment arguments at the heart of NAGA’s lawsuit. As our case moves forward, this decision is a powerful boost. It shows that the fight to defend respectful Native names, imagery, and heritage is not only morally right – it is legally right. When NAGA wins in the Supreme Court, we will work community by community to restore Native representation that was wrongly removed and replace erasure with education, curriculum, and genuine partnerships with Native people. Were they big English speakers? Obviously it wasn’t their Native language. In fact there were over 250-300 original tribal languages. But you must think that isn’t relevant, like they don’t translate ie Oklahoma? We gave you multiple uses of the word Red Skin and Red People. Don’t understand your point. Context and intent matter.  Activists intend to make Redskins a pejorative term. The American Indian disagrees and chooses to elevate and reclaim the Name Redskins. You seem to think this is about one name. It’s about all of our names and imagery. Educate not Eradicate.
