I liked him for three years.
Three years of sitting close enough to smell his cologne and pretending I wasn't counting the seconds.
He never knew I existed. Not really. I was just "oh yeah, her."
...
One day I finally said it.
Told him everything. The three years. The counting. All of it.
He laughed.
Not cruelly. Just surprised. Like the idea had never once crossed his mind and he didn't know what else to do with his face.
That laugh aged me.

A week later he asked my best friend out.
She said yes without telling me first.
I found out at lunch when she showed me his text with a smile so wide she didn't even notice my face.
I said "oh my God congratulations."
I excused myself to the bathroom.
Sat on the floor for four minutes.
Came back out and finished my food.

They almost didn't work out once. Six months in he called me... ME, to talk about their fight.
I listened. I gave advice. I told him she was worth fighting for.
They've been together four years now. Engaged last Christmas.
I was a bridesmaid at the proposal dinner. Held the camera while he got down on one knee.
