Had the first day in weeks to sit down and actual write some research. Finally completed the first draft of a chapter I'm writing about perceptions of impoliteness in Ado's USSEEWA. I'm sure it's full of typos/phrasing I need to fix, but excited I can now do data analysis.

@linguistMasoud I think missing from the comments so far is a question of methodology. Often, linguistics has more in common methodologically with social sciences than humanities... separate from that, I have always thought of linguistics as a humanistic social science....

I've always thought linguistics counts as humanities but it seems not? Is it generally accepted that linguistics is a social science? Do people agree with the Wikipedia classification here?

@garicgymro Hard agree. Although personally, I prefer to not put an age-related label on the idea that being considerate to others is important…

I haven't noticed this in libraries especially but I absolutely do share the (boomerish but correct) view that it's extremely impolite and antisocial to play music in public places such that other people can hear it.

@JaeTakeuchi Yes you may. I didn't ask any questions though. This is made by scraping r/LearnJapanese by searching for (English) threads about nonstandard katakana use and saving/coding answers.

If you ask Reddit why Japanese words normally written in kanji/hiragana sometimes appear in katakana, these are the explanations you are likely to get, and the likelihood of you getting each one.

@AshleyRMoore3 @furkann_kir Was going to suggest a phone app as well. I have "scanner mini" on my phone & it works great, but there is a second step to get it OCRed, you have to open it up in Adobe & convert it. But you do have the PDf then as well. So if the "live text" option doesn't work, try this app.
