Gregory Meeks (D-NY), one of the Democrats leading the charge to whip Democratic votes on the “clean” reauthorization of FISA pushed by the Trump administration— in particular, Stephen Miller—justified his position by claiming he has to “do his job” to prevent “terrorist attacks” that could be prevented by an extension of Section 702. When pressed by Drop Site’s @JulianAndreone on the fact that Section 702 was renewed last month through March 2027 and that the backdoor search loophole was used to spy on Black Lives Matter protestors in 2020, Meeks reiterated his talking points that had just been debunked, saying, “Ultimately, I’m going to have to make a decision when it’s on the floor.… There is already information that I’ve been able to receive that have saved us or our allies … [Section 702] has prevented terrorist attacks.” A vote is possible on the House floor as early as this afternoon.

So everyone is clear: Trump falsely claims FISA 702 is simply foreign collection. He leaves out that the government “incidentally” collects huge volumes of Americans’ communications under this program and then searches them without a warrant. That’s why Section 702 is the most dangerous part of FISA for ordinary Americans. Title I at least requires individualized court orders—even if those were abused against him. A “clean” extension skips any meaningful safeguards for our rights. Tell your representative to vote NO on reauthorizing FISA 702 without a warrant requirement.

Remember, @jahimes recently told reporters that he received real-time updates on FISA abuse and that the program had never been abused under Trump Maybe it's time to stop playing "If [I can pretend] it ain't broke, don't fix it"

The simple answer is because his claim is false. Congress does not have the ability to audit FISA 702 queries for propriety. They depend on the DOJ for oversight, and even if that review is trustworthy it does not occur in "real time"

If @jahimes actually had ability to detect FISA 702 abuse in real-time, why didn't he alert the public when it was abused to query BLM protesters, or lawmakers, or Congressional staff, or 19,000 campaign donors, or a judge reporting civil rights violations?
