Disillusioned ex Tory, now SDP. I was a woman before it was fashionable. I still think Brexit was a good idea. West Ham and my dogs are the loves of my life.

@IainDale You were thrilled when Sunak appointed Jenrick to (according to you) keep an eye on Suella. You were very positive about him and the appointment because you said you'd always liked him and he was a decent guy (or words to that effect)

Roughly 10 years ago, I had supper with a few friends & quite a large number of people I didn’t know, & one man brought his fiancée who suffered from severe coprolalia (a form of Tourette’s, where your brain makes you involuntarily blurt out inappropriate & offensive things.) Over the course of the evening, she happened to shout out the most derogatory homophobic slurs one could imagine whenever I spoke. Because I KNEW she had this condition she COULDN’T HELP having, there was ZERO offence taken & we all simply laughed it off. Believe me, there was NO ONE more embarrassed, distressed & upset as SHE was, despite our efforts to reassure her. Probably worth bearing in mind before mindlessly castigating someone for a condition that is already hell to live with…

@RebeccaCNReid Obviously I'm happy you're happier and have had such a fulfilling and productive year but just wanted to say I miss seeing you on what was your weekly GBN evening slot. Didn't always agree with you (mostly didn't tbh!) but always enjoyed listening to your views and humour.

I got married, had a baby, wrote two plays and a novel and it was the least stressful year I'd had since I was 23?!

I've just clocked that it's officially a year since I stopped doing television debates and, this may really surprise you, it's been one of the happiest 12 month periods of my life. How weird is that??? Literally can't imagine what might have changed.

I don't think the two Labour MPs on Laura Kuenssberg this morning have mentioned breakfast clubs enough. Yes, everything's on its arse again, but look - Weetabix.

Continuing to vape after quitting smoking linked to lower risk of relapse - Wolfson Institute of Population Health. I stopped smoking and now vape. I don’t understand why signs everywhere say ‘no smoking or vaping’. Why do we equate the 2? It’s crazy qmul.ac.uk/wiph/news/late…

@Tinabobagain Pernod for me too, I drank it with blackcurrant all the time because my first proper boyfriend drank it as a chaser. I was always grim the following morning but one NYE I was violently ill and home long before midnight (so what was the point?!) and have never touched it since.

The man was no longer at the barbers so you just logged it as a crime but didn't attend. Why not @CambsCops? The barber shop had decent CCTV footage. You could have put out a warning for the wider public.

Anthony Williams, 32, has so far been charged over the train attack and the Pontoon Dock DLR station stabbing Cambridgeshire Police said: We are aware of three incidents that occurred in Peterborough on Friday evening (31 October) and Saturday morning (1 November). The first incident of a man with a knife at a barbers in Fletton happened at 7.25pm on Friday but was reported to us at 9.10pm - two hours after the incident occurred. At the time of reporting the man was no longer there and had not returned, so we did not send officers, but a crime was raised. The second incident was reported to us at 9.25am on Saturday again by the barbers in Fletton while the man was still at the scene.  Officers were deployed to the location and arrived within 18 minutes. Upon searching the area, officers were unable to locate the man or identify him and a crime was raised. There was also a third incident that police also believe may be linked which also happened on Friday 31 October at 7.10pm, where a 14-year-old was stabbed by a man with a knife in the city centre.  They were taken to Peterborough City Hospital with minor injuries and were later discharged. The offender had left the scene when the call was made and despite a search of the area by officers and a police dog, the offender was not identified.  A crime was raised and an investigation commenced, with scenes of crime attending. We are currently reviewing all incidents in the timeframe to understand whether there were any further potential offences. British Transport Police retain primacy for the overall investigation, which will include these three incidents. We voluntarily referred ourselves to the IOPC for independent scrutiny of these incidents, as is standard practice in these cases.

@photomikeyhere @Telegraph Last year I paid £30 and when it was up for renewal it had massively jumped in price (£150ish?) so I contacted them to cancel. They slashed the price to £39 so I accepted.

@afneil Labour is in a far more vulnerable position than the Tories. They can’t balance the budget, can’t control our borders, practice two-tier polling, are addicted to mass immigration and habitually take sides with Britain's anti-colonial opponents. Down from here...

JESS PHILLIPS Some years ago I was on the BBC2 lunchtime political tv show with Jess Phillips. During the show she was asked how she had proceeded to take up the issue we were discussing with the government. She replied that she had written to PM Theresa May asking for a meeting, but she claimed she was ignored by the PM. How cruel! I saw TM a few hours later and told her about this. A few days later, TM told me that they had conducted an investigation and neither No10 nor her private office had received anything from Jess P. Nevertheless, TM said she had now written to Jess on No10 paper inviting her to a one to one meeting to discuss her concerns. Several weeks later, TM told me that she had received no response from Jess. Since then, I treat anything Jess P says with caution.

@LuggJudith @KemiBadenoch I think Kemi and the Tories have had a good conference. A brilliant one if you measure it by how well it was expected to go.

@afneil @RCrowcroft A doctor in the NHS expressing hatred for Israel & praising the murder of Jews. My husband is currently in hospital. He’ll need feeding up when he gets out. He said, “I’ll tell them I’ve got a Jewish wife who loves to feed me!” I begged him not to mention he’s married to a Jew😢

Further update: Father of Manchester synagogue terrorist praised the Oct 7 Hamas terrorists as ‘Allah’s men on earth’. Faraj Al-Shamie posted on Facebook his support for the invasion of Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 civilians and soldiers taken hostage. Al-Shamie, a trauma surgeon living in a council house in Britain, said that the Hamas terrorists who had infiltrated the Jewish state had “proved beyond a shadow of a doubt” that Israel would be destroyed eventually. Rather undermines Al-Shamie Sr’s statement expressing “profound shock” in the wake of his son’s killing spree.
Andrew Neil@afneil

Update on the Manchester terrorist: Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, came to the UK from Syria as a young child. He grew up just around the corner from the synagogue he attacked. He is thought to have been granted British citizenship in 2006 when he was a teenager, aged around 16. It is believed he was a dad - there’s a photo shared by own father last year showing him holding a baby in his arms captioned 'great welcome grandson'. No evidence he had been referred to the Government's anti-terror programme Prevent or was known to police or the security services. Yet undoubtedly an Islamist. Not from a deprived background. His father, Faraj Al-Shamie, believed to be a trauma doctor who has worked for several NGOs in warzones across the world. The killer worked as a tutor teaching English and computing. Police have arrested two men aged in their 30s and a woman in her 60s on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack. So perhaps not a lone wolf after all …
