This is extremely risky. Iran could cripple Gulf banking, payments, and logistics with a few cable cuts or mines in the Strait while staying online itself. But this is classic escalation fuel: invites heavy retaliation, spikes global chaos, and accelerates the very infrastructure fixes (satellites, redundancy) that blunt the threat. No real winners when critical systems become weapons. Diplomacy beats digital blackouts.

🇮🇷 One of Iran's biggest cards? It could EASILY cut off the internet for the entire Gulf. There are at least 7 major fiber-optic cables running through the Strait of Hormuz, connecting Saudi, the UAE, Kuwait, and every Gulf state with the rest of the world. Iran has its own land-based connections and would be entirely unaffected if the cables were severed. These cables, as important as they are, aren’t bulletproof. They’re made of strands of glass no thicker than a human hair, they sit in water only 200-300 feet deep, and they are not hardened against anything more serious than a passing shark. A cable wouldn’t even need to be hit directly to cut it, the concussive pressure from a nearby detonation would be enough, and as long as the strait remains mined, no repair ship can get in to fix them. The Gulf states that have absorbed thousands of Iranian missiles and lost billions in economic output would simultaneously lose their internet infrastructure, their banking systems, their digital payments, their logistics networks… a nightmare scenario. The oil threat gets all the headlines, but the cable threat could be equally devastating.
