@vanbosic @fisackerly What are "we" supposed to do exactly? The creator of Harry Potter is a vicious bigot who uses the wealth and popularity she gets from the franchise she created to make the world more hostile to marginalized people. This may be hard to swallow, but there is no separating the two.

@fisackerly Actually, all this is doing is promoting transphobia and it's crazy that you guys don't realize how much damage this does. We need to keep transphobia as far away from Harry Potter as possible or it's just going to use it as a way to reach more people.

From wizarding slurs to house elf slavery and even the sorting hat, inequality is baked into the setting. It's very Handsmaid's Tale-esque in its liberal "what if white people suffered from all the things minorities do?" essence

The reason for this is that the Wizarding world is built on oppression, othering, and prejudice. It's just that most of that is either implied, analogized, or subtly justified. All that, however, would become much more obvious with a black character present.

The simple act of experiencing a work, of "consuming" it, becomes the be-all and end-all, and trying to engage with the work on anything resembling a deeper level gets decried as "pretentious" or "taking things too seriously."

Personally I think this shift is an example of the ways that capitalism wants to turn us from active participants in culture into passive consumers. The question around which DotA revolves has changed from "what do you think about a work?" to "have you consumed a work?"

Sometimes I'm tempted to write an essay on why Death of the Author has warped from a question of whether an authors own opinions regarding their work should influence yours or if the work should stand on its own to a question of if it's okay to "consume" art made by a dick
Avary@LayOnbedL

@DiscussingFilm People who hate Harry Potter because they can't separate the art from the artist.

@GoodLuckIvarent Its funny that the first dragons dogma actually had both guts and griffith's armor sets/weapons in the game but ended up having to take them out due to a rights issue.

If people are fighting for an orb you are reading fantasy. If people are fighting for a cube you are reading sci-fi. If it has more sides than that. I dont know. I dont know man.

@RepublicofTim @raqattack08 Don't know what you want me to say, he was posting those skull pics on IG and bigging up the military on every talk show back then and it didn't cause any significant controversy or backlash. Didn't cause any problem at all.

The fact that Jon Bernthal was given a quick 60-minute Punisher project and he decided to write yet another "What if Frank Castle was retired?" story. I loved him in Daredevil season 2 so much so it's hard to face that deep down he just doesn't understand the Punisher.
Levi@Imn0tDaredevil

Giving Jon Bernthal creative control over Punisher is like giving a chimp a machine gun. Dude is literally gonna repeat the same fucking arc from seasons 1 and 2 and call it quits

@bingbinghulu @futchism Yeah and all the unhealthy food is right at the front of the grocery store next to the registers so it's really not someone's fault if they walk out of Safeway with a bag full of snickers bars

@futchism it's hard to blame them because the most popular books that are always out in the open shelves in libraries and stores are those wattpad stories. for ppl that have never grown up going to the library/very into reading they will start there and inevitably be disappointed

@AllexiConn @klara_sjo You realize reading and literacy are skills right? Skills with levels of competency, skills you can lose if you don't practice

@klara_sjo Yes, it's just semantics is all, b/c "reading" is the visual method of consuming literature. The latter depends on the person.
