@historyinmemes Back then a man with a high school education (perhaps with an illustrative HS football career) could work at a women’s shoe store and still afford a big house

One man’s story about working at Sears in the 1990s has sparked a wave of debate online about how much the economy has changed since then.

@historyinmemes Both my grandmother and aunt made careers at Sears and both supported their family households. They owned their homes. They weren't wealthy, but they had clean clothes and food on the table. Drove decent cars. Both passed on Sears stock to their children. We lost that way.

@historyinmemes People working at Sears in the 90’s weren’t wealthy. These nostalgic posts are so stupid. People were poor 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago. Actually people were more poor back then. Posts are so stupid

In the early days of car repair before in ground hoists were a thing, cars were lifted up by a chain hoist to be serviced. The high school that I teach auto shop at, is so old it still has the original chain hoist and rail used to lift vehicles back in those days. Doesn’t look like a very safe way to work on a vehicle , but that’s the way it was done way back then.

Told my friend not to do this or he would hurt his tendon really bad and he immediately did this and hurt his tendon really bad and now he is unironically pretty mad at me. Is he stupid?

@TheEXECUTlONER_ Funny how foreign automakers have service centers at their dealerships, I wonder why?…..

This mechanic says that if it wasn’t for American made cars, he doesn’t know if they would be in business. He points out that all the cars currently in the bays are American made. He says they work on all makes and models but it’s the American made cars the make up the majority of their business. He says that the only foreign cars in the parking lot belong to himself and other people who work there. He says if you want a car that lasts, buy a Toyota. I had a Honda Civic once and got over 500K miles on it. Had a Nissan and got well over 300K miles on it. I have owned Ford, Chevy and GM cars. I’ll be honest, they didn’t last like the foreign cars. I do think American trucks are better than foreign trucks but why can’t we make good cars that last ? What do you think? Do you think he’s right? Are you a die hard Ford Chevy or GM person? Do you own a foreign car or an American made car?

@SolidSnake57103 @CostaKapo The powerstroke 6.0 is probably the best engine ever developed from a technical perspective… bulletproof them and they make more power/liter than anything else. Way ahead of its time. 4v triton is great. Your options are all trash.

My 1st car was 1999 Cadillac Deville, like the one pictured. I got it before I turned 16 because Maine had workers permits back then, and I had a job at a Lincoln Mercury dealership in Maine. It had what is largely considered one of the worst engines of all time...the Northstar.

@1Nicdar These Long John posts are dumb. The one in my town is active and has plenty of customers. LJ’s doesn’t serve breakfast so dinner is their main thing. People compare it to other fast food places that serve 24hrs so LJ always looks dead but its not

I don’t get it, the one in my town is still going strong? I’ve maybe eaten there once in 30 years. I do admire the tenacity and unwillingness to compromise of the people keeping it open.

@x0rdfx @venom9905 @CyberPunkCortes Government regulations have forced automakers to make what were once options now standard. Back up cameras, blind spot alerts, air bags, abs, collision detection systems. All adds to vehicle costs

@venom9905 @SolidSnake57103 @CyberPunkCortes Yeah the car model that I still drive from that era costs over twice as much now for the same loadout. The new ones aren't even significantly faster or larger and the new electronics (many of them mandatory) sure don't explain the massive price jump either.

Vehicle prices and interest rates before the 2008 financial crash. America never recovered after that.
