This is where us Appalachian soldiers were stationed for much of the year we were in Iraq. This specific performance happened after we left, but there were a few before we left.
I never got to see anything USO related though. That was for the people who had free time, and we were constantly on missions.
We stayed in mortar alley, which was a smaller section of the base that got mortared more than anywhere else…basically, we were the section that gave the base the name. For about 120 straight nights we took incoming fire. Good times.

In 2004, at the peak of his fame off the back of Get Rich or Die Tryin', 50 Cent travelled to Iraq with his G-Unit crew to perform for American troops. He flew into Camp Anaconda, a base so volatile it was nicknamed "Mortaritaville" because of the constant bombardment. The base, also known as Logistics Support Area Anaconda near Balad, was one of the most frequently attacked US installations in the country, taking regular indirect fire from mortars and rockets. Wearing a bulletproof vest and surrounded by military personnel, he delivered an energetic concert that lifted the spirits of the soldiers By multiple accounts of the visit, an officer warned him before he went on, "You could die today," and he opened the set with "What Up Gangsta."

@GetOnTap I got to see Ozzy at camp Casey in Korea around 2001 ish.. in a small armory. What a great time.

@GetOnTap True. I was overseas and worked the flight line. 12-hour shifts with weekend duty. The people in the dress blues who worked in offices got the concerts, parties, and give-aways.

@RussTbuckeyes They were scraping the bottom of the barrel to get us, we couldn’t give a shit less on the tower. Did not take it seriously and were so unprofessional they eventually gave the whole thing to the 82nd🤣

@Kenny_A_1 I did bump into the Big Show, literally, in big chow hall for Christmas. I was too tired to care, just got back from Baghdad on a mission I thought we’d surely fight the entire way through

@RussTbuckeyes Yea if we weren’t running missions they had us in guard towers, guarding Iraqis, or searching people coming on base. I preferred missions.
