In a recent podcast with the Professional Soccer Athletic Training Society, Bryan Heiderscheit discusses the quantification of edema in hamstring injuries and how he uses this objective data to inform decisions for a personalized rehab approach.
"Where was it? How was it distributed between the muscles? Where was it relative to the sciatic nerve? It gave us a really good way to drill down how much contact was happening."

Springbok Analytics latest research publication is now live: A deep learning algorithm for automatic 3D segmentation and quantification of hamstrings musculotendon injury from MRI. This work is among the first to validate AI for automated hamstring injury assessment, addressing a long-standing challenge in reproducibility and scale.
Trained on ~𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗥 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 and validated against 𝟮𝟴 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀
→ 3D models segmented muscles, tendons, and edema in minutes
→ Accuracy matched expert labels (Muscles R ≥ 0.99, Edema R = 0.97)
→ AI metrics like edema volume and % muscle involvement tracked with BAMIC severity grades
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: This approach moves injury characterization from subjective reads to objective, quantitative data. By providing reproducible 3D measures of injury size, location, and tissue involvement, AI can support more consistent grading, better communication, and stronger return-to-play decisions.

As highlighted by Dr. Fearghal Kerin in the latest issue of @FMPA_Official magazine, managing these injuries requires more than just strength testing or return-to-play timelines.
This feature outlines the importance of looking beyond strength and group level metrics when managing high-grade hamstring injuries. As stated, "There is much to learn from recurrent injuries - they often show us what wasn't addressed the first time."

Springbok’s Declan Carmichael and David Lane recently had the privilege of joining the Melbourne and Sydney FSHD community updates, a valuable opportunity to share advances in MRI and disease progression research while listening to the perspectives of the FSHD community.
The strides in understanding this condition are nothing short of a shared achievement for a community that has pushed tirelessly for progress. It takes collaboration from investors, researchers, clinicians, and most importantly patients and families.
Joining such an inspiring space would not be possible without Emma Weatherley and the team at @FSHD Global Research Foundation, who continue to show what is possible when passion and purpose come together.

A new @SportsmithHQ article by @SouthamptonFC Football Club Lead of Rehabilitation, @FraserMckinney, using objective, muscle level data to study ankle injuries in athletes.
"Imaging of muscle volume from Springbok indicates changes in muscle size within two weeks of an ankle sprain. This helps explains the reduction in quadricep strength during an isolated knee extension test, or higher loading of the proximal joints during sagittal plane tasks due to ankle invertor dysfunction."
With muscle-level data, we can move beyond surface measures of recovery to sensitively detect early physiological changes after injury and track the effectiveness of rehabilitation strategies over time.
