Dating apps make people race mix less. For nearly a decade, dating platforms have been at the center of a massive sociological experiment. Academic researchers, particularly from institutions like Cornell and the University of Washington, have argued that intimacy is a public infrastructure. Their premise is that because dating apps govern how we meet, they have a responsibility to "disrupt" social structures and "unsettle entrenched preferences" to overcome racial bias. This led to a wave of "Anti-Bias Design" starting in 2018. The strategy was two-fold: first, write algorithms that intentionally prioritize diversity over "similarity" (moving away from the "collaborative filtering" that pairs you with people like your previous matches); and second, remove the tools that allow for personal sorting. Following the social unrest of 2020, major apps like Grindr and Hinge officially removed their ethnicity filters, framing it as a move to prevent "sexual racism." In the Netherlands, the Dutch Institute for Human Rights even intervened in the case of the app Breeze, ruling that their algorithm was justified in being modified because it was suspected of discriminating against certain demographics. However, a comprehensive new 2026 study has revealed that these interventions may have produced the exact opposite of their intended effect. The study, which analyzed millions of digital pairings over the last five years, found that as dating app usage has increased, the percentage of same-race couples has actually risen, while interracial pairings have plateaued or decreased in specific cohorts. The data suggests a "Rubber Band Effect": when platforms removed the ability for users to filter by race, users didn’t become more "diverse" in their tastes. Instead, they became more aggressive in their visual sorting. Because the app no longer did the sorting for them, users reverted to "hyper-assortative" mating—relying more heavily on physical cues of shared heritage and cultural background to filter through the noise of an unfiltered stack.
