I've got a 4090 build PC, a PS5 Pro, a Steam Deck and a Series X and S. All at good prices (PC very good as a won the 4090......thank you @NVIDIAGeForce 😌😁). Glad that I'm set for the forseeable but hate to see some potentially get priced out of a hobby/passion

Well let's see... There was the 9700 pro and subsequently 9800 pro the only card to basically beat it for a time was its own successor. I personally had the 9800 pro which is where I mostly remember them having the crown for "best GPU" It was literally the GPU many of the tech demonstrations of Half-Life 2 were ran on. Definitely this period of time is when I felt they were the most competitive with Nvidia. Even when they didn't beat them, they had something really close and typically a good deal cheaper in relative terms. But doing a bit of research... They had it also with the HD 5870 for a while... And even though it was only for a month or so they had it with the R9 290x. But since then they have never at any point held the title of the best GPU on the market. Again back then this title could bounce back and forth between Radeon and Nvidia even if Radeon's dominance only lasted a short while... They still managed to keep that heat on Nvidia and the entire market benefited thanks to how close things tended to stay back then.

Glad I own an Nvidia GPU. More and more support for big AAA games with stuff that is a significant boon over console like path tracing. Would love if AMD pushed advanced tech like this but alas, their alignment with consoles and very small footprint on PC means that most resource will be going into affordability and mass production Vs cutting edge features.
NVIDIA GeForce@NVIDIAGeForce

Large-scale natural environments are a challenge for real-time ray tracing. RTX Mega Geometry handles massive scenes and updates them up to 100x faster than previous methods, enabling full‑fidelity path tracing with advanced detail.

I had to sit down one day and really think about it because my recollection was full of a lot of gaps but I was able to piece it all together... Even had to go reference old receipts and pictures to remember exact models... But man my list is long! Luckily it's only been more recently where it's every single generation basically 😂 ATi All-in-Wonder 128 '99 ATi Radeon 9800 Pro AIW '03 ATi Radeon x300 '05 Nvidia 7800 GTX '06 Nvidia 8800 GTX 2x SLI '07 Radeon HD 5870 '10 Radeon HD 7970 '12 GTX 780 2x SLI '13 GTX 980 2x SLI '14 GTX 980ti 2x SLI '15 GTX 1080 2x SLI '16 GTX 1080ti 2x SLI '17 RTX 2080ti '18 RTX 3080 '20 RTX 3080ti '21 RTX 4090 '22 RTX 5090 '25

@K__Med How do you remember all that? I had the Orchid Righteous, then a Voodoo 3, then 5, after that I can't remember what I had until the GTX 1080.

My GPU upgrade path: - Trident 4MB with 3dfx Voodoo2 (VGA passthrough) - 3dfx Voodoo 3 - GeForce GTS - ATI Radeon 9700 - GeForce 6800 - GeForce 280 GTX x2 SLI - GeForce GTX 770 - GeForce GTX 980 - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - GeForce RTX 3070 - GeForce RTX 5080 These are just for my main rigs. I had a lot of computers with many different video cards, like the ATI Rage Fury MAXX... which I still don't like to talk about. ATI used to build good hardware with terrible drivers, so they've come a long way since then, but between the Rage Fury MAXX and the Radeon 9700, I was done with ATI long before AMD bought them out.

@MathieuChiasson @V_Missao @PeterP_1985 Yeah so many people are selling the Nvidia software stack so short as a value add... For me over easily worth an extra 30%+ price over not having it. It's no longer just about price tag and raster performance. And AMD has to understand this!!

Exactly. I had Intel in my system for 25 years and I said the entire time I was not against AMD I simply wanted "the best" and that was Intel for so long. Then Intel fumbled the bag hard and Ryzen took up the top spot (9800X3D) and so I switched... Simple as that. I was called an Intel Fanboy for years but in no way was I ever, nor am I an Nvidia Fanboy. I'm just a fanboy of myself and getting the best experience possible for me. And I'll never sell myself short! 😂

Wrong. My GPU history shows I supported AMD/ATi for well over a dozen years. They were always my go-to option because they at the time always had a GPU that was either literally the max best available on the market (which they did several times during that period) or they were so close to nvidia's absolute best and still significantly cheaper that it was worth it to take them over Nvidia. They simply haven't been doing that as of late. They have not had the crown for absolute Best GPU in like more than 15 years... They don't even try at the very top anymore... And what they do offer in the tiers they actually still try to compete is usually not close enough and missing significant features in comparison with a savings that simply doesn't make up for that shortcoming. I have said for years I would be glad to go back to them if they ever took the crown back. Hell if they could ever just compete at the very top and be 95% of everything Nvidia offers at like 85% the price I would probably still take them. But they haven't done that in a long time and it's why my GPU history went from nearly all Radeon to exclusively Nvidia over the last 13 years. @PeterP_1985 Brother even if AMD releases a card that's great for a good price people will still settle for Nvidia. Nvidia has put a chokehold on people for some reason. If not for consoles AMD would go broke lmao

@RGamerB_ @PeterP_1985 It may have compromised version of it, but console will always simply be several steps behind what's possible on PC. Maybe at some point that difference becomes unnoticeable. But definitely not yet!

So, I took that same shot on PS5 Pro. The difference is subtle, yet also quite profound (in my subjective opinion). The lighting, and how light and shadow fill the space, is extremely realistic and accurate in the path traced PC version. Even the small area off to the right (second image) highlights how the lighting and shadow is just so much more accurate. In motion, the impact of this is multiplied quite a bit, as the entire environment just all feels perfectly "grounded" and nothing feels out of place within that environment. This below is obviously a tiny snapshot, as a means to show how even the most mundane thing can highlight a difference. Appreciate that Path Tracing is a high end feature, and this post is not designed to "crap on" the PS5 Pro in any way at all, I'm a tech enthusiast and this stuff hugely interests me. I'll say, subjectively, Path Tracing in motion, is absolutely transformative in a way thats far easier to experience than it is too explain. NOTE - This is DLSS Performance (same base res as PS5 Pro) #PCGaming #PS5Pro #ResidentEvilReqiuem

In motion it's more of a subconscious thing, but your brain does recognize it. At least mine does and I believe Peter's as well... There's a grounding effect that is there where your brain almost believes you're looking at real life. You don't have to zoom in and focus on it. You just feel it. I've done it multiple times a and b testing and no matter what I always end up preferring it on. Something just feels "off" well when it's off 😂

In motion this would be barely noticeable but statically the difference is not subtle, that second light bounce really adds to the realism factor, i play on a 5070ti with PT enabled in perf mode and im 16 hours in and just hitting Leons section now because I keep stopping to take photos, the PT is so good!

@50PlusGamer1970 @snoopdioogo @PeterP_1985 Trust me bro when you have the highest end hardware it's basically just turn on the game and go!! The only ones who have to spend a huge amount of time tweaking are people with much lower end hardware trying to make it perform miracles beyond its real scope.

Developers want to move forward and see the rendering space grow... You don't. And that's fine, but nothing says they need to cater to your particular artistic tastes when they have their own. You can still turn it off if that's the experience that matters more to you than so be it.

@PeterP_1985 It's not great when the rasterization can look far better as per Capcom's older games. It's not enough for me to deal with the fps impact but it's clear raster was an afterthought.

@PeterP_1985 Lens Distortion (+Chromatic Aberration) seems on in the PS5 shot. Not exactly good idea, especially since the effect is notoriously poor in every RE Engine game

@PeterP_1985 @nib95_ Of course it doesn't change anything... Because the comparison had nothing to do with post-processing effects. It would be there no matter what!

Full CA and lens distortion turned on. I don't think it changes what I was talking about regards Path Tracing at all. As I say in OG post, the impact of Path Tracing as you play, is transformative. Far more impactful than a static image though even on this static, very mundane shot, you can clearly see the difference in lighting

Like I literally only looked at the difference in shadows and never even paid attention to the fact that one was a little softer and had chromatic aberration... I as a fellow tech enthusiast I saw exactly what you were focusing on and the very minute detail in the shadows that simply isn't there in the PS5 Pro shot. No chromatic aberration or other post-processing is affecting what you're actually trying to compare.

For me, the way the light is filling the space is the stand out difference here and how it creating shadow in the right way etc. The CA on the second image doesn't impact the lighting and the depth it adds to the scene. I'll take the same shot on PC and make sure CA is turned on.

You're not rubbish, you're just experiencing the game as intended. People who complete it in a couple hours are literally skipping every single thing possible. Resident Evil is kind of built that way on purpose. A full playthrough with full experience is going to be a pretty long one... But you can speedrun them and they are built around it... It's actually a lot of the fun for some people to try and see how quickly they can beat it. The game even builds in achievements and rewards for it. But none of that is to say the game is short. All of that is additive for those who want to continue enjoying the game past the initial playthrough. But someone sees a post online where someone mentions they beat the game in 3 hours and suddenly it's the worst game ever and way too short blah blah blah. Freaking hate the disingenuousness of social media!

Yep, my final clear time showed 14 and 1/2 hours and my total play time from Steam was over 22 hours. I swear to God people are the most disingenuous fucks when it comes to stuff like this online because it's anything but short. I don't care if it's technically possible to complete it in 2 hours. Speed running a game is not the same thing as fully experiencing it.
