The most based thing I'm going to say about the gaming industry is that you were never enough.
The industry wants more than what you offered.
They knew you were spending a lot of time in one game. So they found ways to get you spend more while you were playing it (MTX & DLC).
They knew gaming was white male dominated. So they needed to push diversity to make it more friendly for different demographics to sell more.
They knew consoles weren't growing in big ways. So some went for mobile and cloud.
Next it'll be that gamers get stuck to the point they don't buy new games so they'll push for self playing games so you can finally finish it to move on.
Corporations will always push for growth at the expense of their current base because they assume loyalty.
That's where the advent of the self funded indies with AA budgets are really becoming the treasure trove for gamers. It's coming for folk that are interested in making a good game, not a game that helps increase this quarters revenue goals.
I do say this with a level of pessimism BUT I do think that there have been some positive changes along the way to get more people to play but a lot of it was never organic. It was done to help a spreadsheet.
AAA gaming is in a weird state but thankfully there are so many great games to play out there, they aren't needed like they once were but investments are drying up so I am worried for the AA titles.
Don't know what the future holds but it sucks that the push for YoY profits will continue squeezing gaming in the top. And the single player game is under attack by the live service market so that's a whole other beast.
Overall, gaming is... Going through changes...
