@zacbowden LOL, why not just improve on Win 10 indefinitely as was the original plan?

For those who like to keep track of codenames, this entire effort is codenamed "Windows K2"

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

I am vocal about 8GB RAM laptops because I am a game dev. We were also vocal about cut down 10GB RAM in Xbox Series S. Steam Deck is a 4 year old $399 gaming device with 16GB RAM. It's the modern min spec for gaming. I would love to see more games on Macs, but 8GB alienates devs.

@tipheret You can backup Time Machine to a regular SMB network share. For me that just happens to be on an old Synology, but it need not be FWIW, I don’t think I would get another Synology tbh.. reliable though it has been, they’re overpriced and drive lock-in was a bit of a sour note

I've been using MacBooks for 20 years. Never had a serious issue. Until now. My MacBook Air M4 is in service for the second time - two weeks after the first repair. The symptom: stops charging. The fix: full logic board replacement, which means complete data loss. First time I recovered everything via Time Machine — slow (24h+), but it worked. After the repair, Apple quietly blocked new backups to my Time Capsule. Machine ID changed with the board, old backup couldn't continue. A workaround I found online didn't help. A week later — dead again. This time with no backup. Time Capsule discontinued in 2018, never replaced. Is Synology the only real option now, or is there something simpler I'm missing?

ICE officers stopped by our farm yesterday. “We need to inspect your property for illegal aliens,” one of them said. I replied, “Alright, but whatever you do, don’t go into that field over there.” The officer in charge exploded. “Mister, I have the authority of the federal government behind me!” he barked, reaching into his back pocket. He yanked out a badge and shoved it in my face. “See this fucking badge? This badge means I can go wherever I want on ANY land. No questions asked, no answers given. Am I clear? Do you understand?” I nodded politely and said, “Be my guest.” Then I went back to my chores. About ten minutes later, I heard screaming. I looked up and saw six ICE agents running for their lives, being chased by my big, mean, old bull. And with every step, that bull was closing in fast. It looked like they were about to get gored for sure. So I dropped my tools, ran over to the fence, and shouted at the top of my lungs: “YOUR BADGE! SHOW HIM YOUR FUCKING BADGE!”

Here’s a real task from my job. I have a 100GB binary file. Produced daily. I can’t grep it. But I can decode it. However, I can’t store the decoded version either. It’s too big. How do I efficiently query it? Decoding piped to grep takes 2 minutes. I want 2 seconds.
