On this day in history in 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by a man named John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley, standing among a group of reporters, fired six shots at the president, hitting Reagan and three of his attendants. As the president was being prepared for surgery at George Washington University Hospital, he joked to his wife, “Honey, I forgot to duck.” He then said to the surgeons, “Please tell me you’re all Republicans.” One of the surgeons replied, “Today, we’re all Republicans.” The next day, the 70-year-old president returned to some of his executive duties, and on April 11, he returned to the White House.

This is a procession of the Archconfraternity of the Lord's Passion, which is a very old Catholic tradition celebrated every Friday of Lent and on Good Friday at the Franciscan Church in Kraków, Poland. As one of the most striking and atmospheric religious traditions in Europe, the "Procession of the Dead" is noted for its somber medieval aesthetics and gothic atmosphere. Members of the archconfraternity wear black, floor-length robes with pointed hoods that completely cover the face, leaving only small slits for the eyes. This is intended to ensure anonymity, symbolizing that their penance is before God alone, not for public recognition. During the procession, members carry various "Instruments of the Passion," but perhaps the most jarring are the skulls of deceased brothers or wooden replicas, meant to serve as a memento mori (a reminder of mortality). The archconfraternity was founded in Poland at the end of the 16th century to contemplate the Passion of Christ. Historically, in addition to participating in penitential services, the members of this association dealt with a wide range of charitable and social activities, including the organization of funerals. One of the many privileges granted to them was the release of one prisoner on Maundy Thursday, who had been sentenced to death. A released prisoner then took part in the procession carrying a candle and a skull.

President Reagan was shot 45 years ago today. I was a little kid growing up in Indiana at the time and this news troubled me greatly, so I handmade a "get well" card, grabbed some jellybeans from our kitchen, and asked my mom to mail them off to the White House. He wrote back:

This socialist pope, and his predecessor make it so difficult to attend Mass as their non-Biblical teachings flow to the priests who echo during homilies. Offensive any time but especially during Holy Week... Thank God for @HallowApp and my personal spiritual relationship with God.
