On this day in history in 1904, the United States acquired the rights to build the Panama Canal, creating a historic passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
For centuries, ships had to sail the dangerous route around Cape Horn. The French tried to create the canal but lost thousands of workers to accidents and disease. America took over construction in 1904, completed the canal in 1914, and fully operated it until 1979, when President Jimmy Carter began transferring control to Panama.

On this day in history in 2011, brave U.S. forces raided the hideout of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
At 1 a.m., 23 U.S. Navy SEALs in Black Hawk helicopters descended on the compound and killed Osama bin Laden and his adult son. His body was then taken by helicopter to Afghanistan for identification before being thrown into the Arabian Sea.
