Q: Nowhere in Scripture does it say we are all spirit children of God, but it does say we can become children of God through adoption. A: "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." Romans 8:16 But yes, it can be confusing because there are two types of "children of God." There's the literal kind, and the kind that is a "follower." We are all literally spirit children of God, in that we are the same species as Him, but we become followers of God and part of his family through our choices. This is made plain in the scripture you quoted, where Jesus says, "Ye are of your father the devil...." We know he doesn't mean certain humans are literally children of the devil, but that certain people choose to follow the devil. So we can literally be God's children, and also become God's children through adoption, and there is no conflict between these two ideas once you understand which scriptures refer to which type of "child of God."
