@ih8mylifeffs @Orekifan_ You can certainly absorb passive elements of the game's story by watching it, but you can't get the full experience. You don't build the same level of connection without directly being involved in it. Shadow of the Colossus, for example, doesn't work if you're not playing it.

Its what makes videogames unique, because its your own interactable story/game. That being said, that narrative you say can be driven from just watching an LP

@ih8mylifeffs @Orekifan_ Which is something you don't have to do. Great example of what I'm talking about actually. The player shapes the narrative via their interactions. But the point is, Kratos' whole self reflective arc relies on you having those slaughtered hundreds of enemies along the way.

@ih8mylifeffs @Orekifan_ I'd say you're missing the whole point of God of War. There's a reason you're always in control of Kratos' most violent antics. You're supposed to question yourself for gleefully caving Hercules' skull in or gouging Poseidon's eyes out.

@Orekifan_ I get that point but also like…thats the exception to the rule. Like yes interacting does have its value and its what makes games unique in comparison to movies, but if im watching someone hack through enemies in GoW instead of doing it myself, im not losing much

@dimitri_barron @skeleoncemore -those characters you built relationships with and the world you all inhabited for the duration of that journey. That impact is severely lessened if you just watch someone else go through it. You haven't engaged with the world and characters in the same way they have.

@bearIysane @pricefieldism @stinkydinky325 Yes, but you lose the experience of being an active participant. Games with choices are usually designed in such a way that you feel the weight of the choice in that moment. You don't get that if you don't play.

@dimitri_barron @skeleoncemore No. It's nothing to do with breaking the fourth wall. Your playthrough of Skyrim would be completely different to mine. You would have your own character, who would have interacted with the world in a completely unique way from my own. The story is your journey.

Also, me pulling the trigger at the end of MGS3 or pressing the thumbsticks to gouge out Poseidon's eyes in GoW3 holds much more weight than you just watching me do it.

@dimitri_barron @skeleoncemore The story is the game. Playing the game. Experiencing the journey. I set out on the journey, fought long and hard to defeat a powerful foe and finally overcame the challenge to save the world. I didn't watch it happen, I actively participated. It's key.

As far as MGS3, I haven't played it and I don't know how it ends, but I'll grant you that it almost definitely has more weight if you play it yourself as intended. Doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the story of the game (which is in fact just the cutscenes)
