Reflecting on Remembrance Day (Veteran's Day in the US) and what 11/11 meant to the nurses I study. Some expressed hope for the future, but not all. Helen Dore Boylston of the 22 Massachusetts Hospital is clear about her feelings:

Easily one of my favorite WWI posters. Memorable, for sure, I am struck by the challenge to 'be a man and do it,' and the implied opportunities that could come with accepting that call (equality, perhaps?)

Primary source time! I came across this gem on my hunt for first-hand accounts of nurse's experiences in WWI. I can't wait to get my hands on a full copy of it, but the pages I've previewed so far have been informative and entertaining!

What sustains me as a teacher and researcher? Looking over at my work shelf at the letters from students throughout the years, for one. I've been teaching for 10 years now and have encountered some incredible people. Their journeys have also inspired me as a student, as well.

My proposed thesis is a transnational study on Anglo-Allied nurses on the Western Front, but I also teach American Civil War. As my mind switches from teacher to researcher, so does my book pile. What does your book pile look like? (PS--tonight's tea is ginger and dandelion).
