@ThePhDPlace Because it shows that women have been writing and publishing about their roles in war for centuries but because they were excluded from academia, they were ignored. IOW, their stories are *everywhere* if we know where to look and what to look for.

@arm_hist @froglet80 @_wej01 What it seems is happening is there aren’t consequences and the kids get pushed through, graduate and no one realizes or cares that they didn’t actually learn. A student should have consequences for turning in a blank test, hopefully to deter the behavior in the future.

MY STUDENT TEACHER QUIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL DAY. A parent sent 14 emails overnight because their son got a zero after turning in a completely blank test. Admin asked her if she had tried “building a relationship” before giving consequences. She left her classroom lanyard on the desk and never came back. The part that really got me was watching admin apologize to the parent before even asking to see the test. Nobody in that meeting cared that the page was completely blank. The entire conversation was about “repairing trust.”

@jesswilson8525 @froglet80 @_wej01 Yep. I have 18-20 year old college students who can't read or write. This is the product of allowing them to hand in blank pages because "we can't make them put words to paper." A lot of blame to go around, but yes, parents should take a big piece of it.

@froglet80 @_wej01 One day you’re going to have a boss you don’t like or isn’t great at their job, but you still have to perform. We aren’t helping kids by pretending the real world doesn’t exist. In fact we are setting them up for failure.

@_wej01 Sometimes I see posts on Twitter and I think they're made up. This? This I believe 100%. I've seen similar examples of this and I've seen the impact its had on these students when they enter college unprepared, illiterate, and entitled.

@pardon_mi But like the students who use Ai as a "tool" can't it also be used as a "tool" just as Turnitin was for traditional plagiarism? No one should be judging off of Ai similarity scores alone just as we didn't with TII or whatever detector you had...

@gavagai70 @pardon_mi That's the usual excuse I get:"Well, I write well, so that's why you confuse it with Ai." Actually, no. Ai produces poorly-written, mediocre-at-best assignments. If you are accused of using Ai, it is not a compliment at all.

@pardon_mi The sad truth is that people who write well are getting accused of using AI, while people who couldn’t write their way out of a paper bag are calling it a “valuable tool.” Elevating mediocrity whilst devaluing skill—what could possibly go wrong?

What's sad is the OP just described & dismissed the purpose of college: to have discussions w/academics about all things intellectual, regardless of plagiarism concerns. If you look at the college model and instinctivley hate it, then, my dear, college is not for you.

Asking a student to make time to come to office hrs to tell you what a paper is about (when they don’t need or want your help) is nuts when you could do your job and just read the paper… This is why so many ppl are turning away from traditional school. Who has the time?

@mr_vossen Zero consequences, for sure. I teach college and had a student throw his wallet at me. They said he was just a kid and really stressed. Sir, he's 20 and that was assault. Next time I'm calling the cops.

I thought I had heard everything. Today I learned that classmates in schools now call kids a "Tryhard" if they actually try in PE class. What in the hell! Our education system is a mess. Parenting is no longer as effective. Any yes, there are virtually zero consequences.

If you haven’t taught in a classroom post-Covid, you don’t know what it is like to teach the modern student. The students have changed. Teaching has changed. You have to be in the classroom daily to understand what I mean.

@dmvtravel80 @TolentinoTeach Yep. I teach college. Post-CoVID it was like I was teaching middle school or upper-elementary. (No offense to teachers who do teach those grades, but I think we can all agree the expectations and maturity should be different at these levels).

@TolentinoTeach Accountability is gone. Post Covid was so soft on everything. “They’ve been through so much…” and was offered as a reason for a million things. Attendance? Behavior? Academic performance? Kids/parents were taught it was all bc of Covid and they didn’t need to do anything.

A child reading a book about football tactics is reading. A child reading a recipe book is reading. A child reading the back of a cereal box is reading. We have an extraordinary habit of deciding which reading counts as real reading. And an equally extraordinary habit of doing it in front of the child. Every book counts. Every page counts. Stop gatekeeping.

@FixingEducation Yep. At the higher ed level, too. And there's a privleging to speaking out. Once you're "in" with admin you can share your thoughts, ideas, and critiques, but if you are not "in" with them, everything you say, even if it's identical to your colleague, is wrong.

In my teaching experience… Teachers who never question administrators’ decisions often get labeled as “good teachers.” Teachers who do ask questions often get labeled as “difficult.” Have you seen this too?

@poetrysecrets Well, and also, to understand there is something essential about the *human* experience that can't be replicated by any other wordly experience. Our weapon is in the name.

we should not be saying that majoring in the humanities is good bc it helps you interpret AI. that's like we've already lost the war. the pitch for humanities has to be more appealing than that. we need to ROMANTICIZE the humanities, show that they make life beautiful and fun

OTD, 1758, 10yo Mary Campbell was abducted by the Lenape in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. After living in captivity in Ohio for over 6 yrs, she was handed over to British forces & transported to Fort Pitt where she eventually returned to colonial society.

Tenured faculty at my school used to only be evaluated once a year. Then one student, *ONE student* complained (out of 1,300) and now we must be evaluated twice a year. (Said tenured fac. shouldn't be let off the hook.) Our union caved. We've gotten nonsense in evals ever since.
Dr. Kathleen E. Padilla@kepadil

I know course evaluations - as a metric - are not perfect, but I do wish students remembered there is a whole person reading the things they write in those reports. Le sigh* *Most were delightful & positive, but those unfairly critical ones always stand out.
