Nos anos 90, ele fundou o Laboratório para Tratamento da Informação na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais com uma ideia ousada para a época: Pesquisa precisava virar produto. Em 1998, nasceu a Miner Technology Group, criada com alunos da universidade. A tecnologia de busca chamou atenção do mercado. Em 1999, a empresa foi vendida ao UOL por cerca de R$ 4 milhões. Para um projeto nascido dentro de uma sala de aula, era histórico. Mas ele não parou. Pouco depois, junto com Berthier Ribeiro-Neto, criou a Akwan Information Technologies, responsável por um mecanismo de busca chamado TodoBR. A empresa cresceu, conquistou clientes corporativos e passou a frequentar os mesmos eventos internacionais que o Google. Em 2005, após cerca de seis meses de negociação, a Akwan foi adquirida pelo Google. Larry Page participou pessoalmente das tratativas. O valor não foi divulgado.
